You opened your eyes and climbed to your feet. There was no sign of Black Diamond or her castle. White Diamond evidently had already left. Everyone else was returning to their senses, including Yellow Diamond.
“Are you hurt?” she asked softly as she helped Blue up.
“No, I seem to be fine. Thank you, Yellow.”
“I don't know what you got yourself into this time, but we can at least be glad that it's over. And you,” she said, turning to face you, “you had something to do with this. Who are you?”
“This is my new pearl,” Blue explained simply. Yellow raised an eyebrow.
“You have a perfectly lovely pearl already. What do you need another for, and why this one? It's obviously defective. Just look, its gem is the wrong colour completely and in the wrong place, it has a discolouration like human skin on its chest, and it's terribly ugly. If it were up to me, I'd be having a rather frank discussion with whoever didn't filter this one out before it formed.”
“Oh, yes, you see…” Blue looked to you anxiously, hoping you could come up with an explanation.
“If I may, My Diamond?” you offered. She nodded eagerly.
“The reason My Diamond has selected me is precisely due to my abnormalities. I lack the natural empathy and low-level telepathy most gems possess. This causes me to be unaffected by My Diamond's aura when she is unhappy. While her primary pearl can meet most of her needs for companionship, I was chosen in the hope that I might be able to cheer her up and keep her happy where others cannot."
“Well Blue, I suppose you always have had a spark for getting some use out of even the most poorly made gems. I hope this idea works well for you. Now then, I have to head back to the surface. No doubt everyone will want me to address what just happened. Would your new pearl mind assisting me in readying my ship?”
“The honour would be mine, Yellow Diamond,” you said, forming the diamond salute even though it was really hard on the forearms.
You were nervous about following Yellow without Blue there to protect you, but reasoned that Yellow knew she'd be hurting Blue if she harmed you in any way. Once you were just inside the entrance to Yellow's ship, she turned and knelt to be (slightly) nearer to your level.
“You know you aren't fooling anybody with that disguise,” she stated.
“I… I'm quite sure I don't know what you mean, Yellow Diamond.”
“Look at yourself. You're so obviously a human that it's almost insulting. And while I don't doubt that what you described is true, I strongly suspect the relationship between the two of you goes… quite a bit beyond that.” You blushed and looked at your feet, afraid of how she was going to react. “Am I wrong?”
“You're right,” you answered nervously.
“Hmph. I suppose I always expected something like this from her. Harmless enough, I suppose. What is your name? Your real name?”
“(Y/N).”
“(Y/N), you can look me in the eye. I'm not going to hurt you. I brought you here to talk to you, that's all. You aren't mine to shatter or however it is one destroys humans, and I know it was you who saved everyone… from something… somehow… we three Diamonds included. In short, you've proven yourself a credit to your species, and regardless you aren't my problem. However, I must confirm something. How badly do you want to make Blue happy?”
You paused, wondering how honest to be.
“With all my heart,” you admitted.
“Would you be willing to sacrifice your own happiness for hers?”
“In a heartbeat,” you replied automatically. “I nearly sacrificed my life for her.”
“You're in love with her, clearly. Can I trust that that will not fade, and that you will not then neglect her and leave her to grief and loneliness once more?”
“I know this isn't the right answer, but I can't say for certain what my feelings will be in the future. But right now I can't see that ever happening. I really love her, and even if this is just a powerful but passing crush, I'll still care about her too much to ever abandon her or grow apart.”
Yellow stood, her expression slightly softer than usual.
“In that case, I'm satisfied. I just wanted to know you'll take good care of her. You may return now.”
“You… aren't jealous?”
“Perhaps a little… but what would be the use in that?” She grinned casually. “You're a human. You'll be dead within mere decades.”
You nodded and smirked.
“At which point she'll need a shoulder her own size to cry on.”
Yellow tilted her head in subtle acknowledgement. You nodded politely to each other, then you turned and went back to Blue and the others.
“(Y/N)! Good, you’re back! I hope Yellow didn’t work you too hard or attempt to intimidate you?” Blue asked.
“Nah. Turns out she just wanted to talk. My disguise didn’t fool her - no offence, Pearl.”
“None taken,” Pearl replied, although she looked a little sad.
“Hey, don’t look so glum. It might’ve fooled her if it wasn’t for the damage, and let’s face it, I don’t look much like a pearl. You didn’t have a great subject to work with.”
“I’ll do better next time,” she said, managing a smile.
“Anyway, as I was saying, she knew I’m human, but she’s fine with it. I think she’s relieved you’re keeping someone around who can keep you happy, and she doesn’t think I’m any threat. We came to an… understanding.” You decided there was no need to specify that the nature of the understanding was ‘she gets you all to yourself as soon as I die.’
“Well, that is… a relief, I suppose. I guess there won’t be any need to disguise you as a gem anymore… except when White’s around, of course. So- wait, what happened to your hand?”
“Oh! Yes! That was there after everyone healed me. It looks like a gemstone of some sort. Also, check this out. Even before that, I discovered I’ve got sort of a Wolverine thing going on.” You summoned your claws and showed them off.
“Ohohoh, wicked!” Jay marvelled.
“Whaaaaaat…” Aquamarine muttered in disbelief.
“Wow,” Pearl whispered.
“Fascinating!” Zircon exclaimed.
“Umm, uh, well done!” Holly declared after struggling to think of something different to say.
“May I see?” Blue asked, gesturing. You held out your hand. She lifted you up to her face and gently held your wrist between her thumb and index finger. A pleasant shiver ran down your spine. You always found it so calming when she did stuff like this; you figured it was probably a combination of the positive physical contact and the sense of calm and security you always felt around her. As she studied the gemstone on your hand, you couldn’t help but giggle. She always wrinkled up her nose whenever she looked closely at things. “What?” she asked with a half-laugh of her own.
“Oh, no, it’s nothing. Just the little faces you make.”
“Ah,” she said smiling, before momentarily crossing her eyes and sticking out her tongue. You both laughed. “It looks like it’s built right into you. There have been rumours of gem-organic hybrids - is there any way you might be one?”
“No, or at least, I can’t see how - both of my parents are human.”
“I suspected not, and besides that wouldn’t explain its sudden emergence.”
“My Diamond, the appearance of the gem upon (Y/N) being healed suggests that it was there to begin with, likely in fragments contained internally, and was restored to its whole state in the process,” Zircon explained.
“Thank you, Zircon. Yes, that does make sense, but what would gem fragments be doing in a human?” Blue pondered. “It's a jaspilite stone, that much is obvious, so that narrows it down. We didn't make very many of those. I only know of one world where they were grown. What was it called again? Oh, I think it was-”
“Wait!” you exclaimed, suddenly covered in goosebumps. “Something feels… really off. I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like weird things will happen if you try to say the name of the planet.”
“I… I think you're right. Oh, I'm getting a bit of a headache. I… I can't seem to remember what it was called… whatever 'it’ was. We only ever sent a small group of jaspilites to Earth. Tactically, they mostly rely on going unseen - sorry to use that particular term - in battle, so almost all of them survived to make the retreat. We only lost three or four, I think.”
“But what could any of them have to do with me?”
“I don't know… but I suppose it doesn't matter for the moment. We're all safe now.” She carefully leaned her forehead against yours. “Were you scared?”
“Of course I was, that was terrifying! I mean, on the one hand, I wasn't scared of dying as long as it meant freeing all of you. I guess I figured the six of you for one of me, that was a good deal. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have felt much differently if it was just one of you guys. But on the other hand, as things went on and I started to think I was winning, I was afraid to die. It just suddenly hit me that, if I sacrificed myself so you could all go free, I'd never know, and I'd never see you again.” You looked down at your friends. “Any of you.”
“Oh, (Y/N),” Blue said, setting you down and morphing to a more humanlike height. She threw her arms around you and hugged you tight without skipping a beat. “Please,” she said, beckoning to the others.
“C'mon, get in here!” you said. Pearl, Holly, Jay, and Zircon all came over and joined you in a great big group hug. “You too,” you said, beckoning to Aquamarine. “Bring it in!” She hesitated, trying to figure out how to participate, eventually putting her arms part of the way around Jay’s leg - the best she could manage. You all bowed your heads forward so they were touching. A tear escaped your eye again… only this one was your own. It was like you'd finally found something you'd been missing all your life. “I love you all so much,” you whispered, and in this shared embrace you realised you'd never before felt so loved and secure.
“So (Y/N),” Blue asked when you finally all broke away, “after all that, are you still sure you want to stay with me?”
“Hmm… an older woman who kind of has a kid? I dunno…”
“(Y/N)!” she exclaimed in feigned shock.
“Well, if you’re gonna be like that about it, I guess I could put up with you for a lifetime or so.”
“If you’re sure, haha. But if I might be serious for a moment… what happened to Black Diamond?”
“I’m not entirely sure. When I woke up she was just gone. But I do think we’ll see her again, and I do think things will be different next time. Pink may be gone, but Black’s still out there, and I don’t think she’s a lost cause.”
“Even supposing she is, perhaps sometimes a lost cause is the best one to fight for.” Blue’s tone was hopeful, but her eyes looked sad again.
“We will find her, you know. And we'll bring her home.”
“I know. I'll search every star if I have to.”
“For now, we have another dilemma: where do we go from here? Do they all just go back to business as usual? Do I try to choose between staying with you and ever seeing home again?”
“Good question,” Blue said, a smile crossing her face as she had an idea. “Who among you is eager to return to your normal lives?” They all looked uncomfortable and no one raised their hand. “And who wishes to remain a team?” Five hands shot up. You added yours. And Blue added hers. “You know, I suppose you all do deserve some form of recognition for your valour and accomplishments today. You all played a part in vanquishing one of the greatest threats our world has faced.” She stepped back and rose to her full height. “For this reason, I name you all today as the first members of my Order of the Blue Knights! No offence, 8XJ.”
“Ehh, you can just add 'and purple’ in the fine print,” she shrugged.
“You will all return to your regular duties for the moment, but at any time I may call upon you again if Homeworld is faced with a new threat… or if I have need of your services… or if I desire company, or simply want to see you all again… suffice it to say, I'll probably find reasons to bring you together quite regularly. Rise now, my knights!”
“No… I can't. No, this isn't right!” Holly cried, kneeling. “My Diamond, I am not the honest and capable servant you think I am!”
“Oh?” Blue asked, genuinely puzzled as to what she meant.
“Holly, please, don't!” Jay hissed urgently.
“My Diamond, I allowed you to believe that those two humans disappeared, but I was deceiving you. They were taken by the Crystal Gem rebels. They walked right in, and I led them straight to you without ever realising something was wrong, and in the end they confronted me and left with the two humans. I was so ashamed and afraid that I never told you, or even made any mention of them. I hoped maybe you wouldn't notice… I was a fool to think so… I'm sorry My Diamond! I failed you and I lied to you! Please, in all your mercy, please forgive me, please!”
A torrent of tears ran down Holly’s cheeks. Blue just looked shocked.
“It wasn't her fault,” Jay declared, stepping forward and putting a hand on Holly's shoulder. “We turned against her, all of us. One of the Crystal Gems is our sister. We got to talking to her, and we found out they actually stopped the Cluster, and they thought you just kidnapped the humans when they weren't in any danger. We sympathised with them, and Holly had always been cruel to us, so when the Crystal Gems were trying to leave with the humans, we helped them. I helped them. Holly was on her own. She never stood a chance. My Diamond, please… don't punish Holly. She was just doing the best she could, and things have changed. She's changed. She's not like she was then, and it'd break my heart if anything happened to her. And please don't punish my sisters. They were just looking out for family. You can make an example of me, whatever that means. Just please be merciful. Not to me. Just don't hurt them, and don't hurt her,” she said, rubbing Holly's shoulder. Blue took a deep breath.
“There's no need for pleading. No one is going to be punished. I can't say that I'm pleased, obviously, and not long ago I can't say that I wouldn't have had you both severely punished… but that was then,” she said, looking briefly to you and then back to them. She sighed. “You're right, Jay. Much has indeed changed. I don't think any of us are the same people we once were. And I like to think we've changed for the better. If what you say is true, I suppose all sides just wanted what was best for the humans, all fancied themselves the rescuers. I can accuse no one of lacking honourable intentions. Holly, I am disappointed that you lied to me and allowed me to think I'd gone mad… but I can understand why you did it, and if you were that fearful for your life, then clearly the blame was partly mine. If I had been kinder, more approachable and personable, created a bond of trust with you, perhaps you would have been forthcoming with me about what had happened. And Jay, although I certainly cannot condone what arguably amounts to treason, I cannot say that anything you and your kin did was morally wrong. You've both made mistakes, and very serious ones, let us not misunderstand that. But so have I.” She knelt before them. “Furthermore, you have shown admirable qualities then and today. Honesty, loyalty, personal growth, willingness to self-sacrifice, family, forgiveness, camaraderie, and friendship, even to those who have done you wrong. Weighed against these noble traits, your mistakes do not weigh so heavily after all. I am proud to call you my knights, and more importantly my friends. Though I hope there will be no further secrets and lies, all is forgiven.”
Jay held Holly's hand and helped her to her feet before the two embraced each other with tears in their eyes.
“If there are no more confessions, shall we be heading home?” Blue asked. Everyone nodded, then walked hand in hand back to the ship. Not quite to the end yet, so maybe it's premature to ask this, but do people want a sequel? I hadn't planned on one, but I see no reason I couldn't do one if there's interest.
