Chapter 1
Tuesday 5:58 a.m.
Shelby
I'm walking through a forest. A very odd forest. There are leaves with eyes and birds with fins. I look up into the trees and see....an owl? It looks like an owl, but doesn't. It has a beak and wings, but a tail in the back like a fish, and it keeps changing colors every two seconds.
The owl-like creature opens it's beak and lets out a beep, making me jump. Much to my surprise, the thing doesn't stop. It just keeps beeping and beeping.
I open my eyes with a start.
Oh. It was a dream.
I sit up and look around my light blue room. "Why won't that beeping stop?", I yell out. I look at my alarm clock, noticing the noise is coming from there. I hit the off button on the top.
Ugh.
First day of school nerves. I need to get ready. I jump out of bed and open the yellow and blue polka-dot curtains covering my window. I look out into my family's beautifully groomed yard, getting lost in thought. I stand there for a few minutes until finally coming back to reality. Sigh. Now I really have to get ready or I'll be late. I quickly shower, get dressed, and hop down the stairs to the kitchen, which makes me wheeze. I bend over, trying to catch my breath. Once I do, I walk over to my mom. "Morning Mom! Where's Dad?", I ask in my high pitched voice. My mother replies, "In his study. Remember he has that big conference coming up and he has a lot of paperwork to do."
Of course! How could I forget? My Dad is the Mayor and he is always busy, but forgetting about this conference! I must be really nervous about school!
My mom pauses her cooking and looks at me, her hands on her hips.
"You didn't forget, did you?", she asks.
"What?", I said, snapping out of my thoughts. "No of course not!", I reply, smiling.
"Good. Your father needs all the support he can get.", Mom says. I smile.
"Yeah. Anyway....what's for breakfast?", I ask. Mom chuckles and hands me a beautiful plate of bacon, eggs, and toast. Delicious!
"Is there ever a time when you're not hungry?", Mom asks chuckling still.
"Nope!", I exclaim, scarfing down my plate of food.
"Well, I'm going to school! Love you Mom!", I say. I kiss her on the cheek and run upstairs to brush my teeth. After I'm finished, I slowly approach the door to my father's study and knock. I hear a faint, "Come in", and open the door.
"Hey honey! Come on in! Are you on your way to school?", he says.
"Yeah. I just came in to say goodbye and see ya later", I reply. I walk around his desk and hug him as we say, "Love you!", at the same time. I laugh and say, "Jynx!"
I'm still smiling as I close the study door, walk downstairs, right out the front door....and stop.
The full reality of what I was about to do hit me.
Public High School.
I've been a private school girl all my life. I had no friends and was bullied quite a bit. Finally, I decided I had had enough. I would rather be a coward and change schools than stand up for myself. My parents were a little shocked at first, but thought I could try one semester and see how I liked it. If I enjoy it and keep my grades up, I can stay. I was honestly surprised at their willingness. Especially considering my.. predicament.
"Miss! We must go now or you'll be late!" Andre, my driver, yells from the car.
I quickly snap out of my thoughts and walk down the driveway. I get in the limo and as we start to drive away I think, "I can do this!"
Nothing like positive words to boost your confidence! I talk with Andre, about little things like school work, tests, and my after-school job at the animal shelter. Andre slows the limo as we arrive at the school.
Westbrooke High.
As I look out the window at the school's beautiful architecture, I notice kids staring at my limo. I knew this was going to happen but it still makes me blush. I hope I actually make friends.
"Good luck Miss Shelby.", Andre says.
"Thanks. I'm gonna need it.", I reply.
I open the car door, step out, and almost immediately hear people whisper things like, "Is that the Mayor's daughter?", and, "She looks so much like her Dad!", and my personal favorite, "Isn't her name Sheldon or something?"
As Andre drives away, I walk quickly to the principal's office, not wanting to cause an even bigger scene. After I'm all signed in, I walk to my first class and, of course, bump into someone.
"Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry!", I say quickly.
"It's fine! I do it all the time!", the girl replies.
She looks me over.
"Aren't you the Mayor's daughter? Shelby right?", she asks. "Guilty.", I respond.
"Welcome to our school! I'm Jess. I'm in charge of the newspaper and the biggest gossip in the school. But don't worry, as long as you don't do anything embarrassing, you won't be in the newspaper! We don't even really write about that kind of stuff. It's more of 'So and so had the best party' and 'So and so are dating'. You know?", Jess says.
"Yeah.", I say, slightly flustered.
"Great! So what's your schedule like? My first class is Home Ec.", Jess says changing the subject.
"Same!", I say relieved.
"Yay! Now, I need to know! What it's like to be the Mayor's daughter? I used to imagine being a princess, and this must be pretty close. A huge house, servants, and all that.", Jess says as we start walking to class.
"It's pretty cool. Another perk I didn't hear you mention, is that I get to come to school in a limo!", I say.
"A limo? Ok, you're my new best friend!", shesays, wrapping her arm around my neck as we walk into the classroom laughing.
(AN)1003 words! OMG! Well enjoy chapter one! Bye!
