Hiccup
"We can't win."
Fireball after fireball hits the ships, splattering the decks with flame and lava. It's all hopeless. Every single one is dragon-proofed, preventing us from even slowing their advance without using the acid of the Changewings conveniently imprisoned on them. Viggo planned his attack well and we can't stop it. There's no way the Berkians would make it in time, if they even came. Our only hope is the barrier across the lagoon, but the Boulder Class dragons constructing it are running low.
"Fall back!" I called. "Our priority is the wall."

"How in Vanaheim will we help with that?" Sharpshot questioned. "We can't spit lava!" Toothless rolled his eyes at the younger dragon. "Ferry rocks to the Gronckles. Keep the Hotburples awake. Stop people from getting depressed and don't say we're losing because that will just make it worse." Sharpshot arrowed back to base, and before long I heard one blast on the horn. Retreat.

"We're losing, Hiccup." Toothless murmured, keeping his voice low so that the others wouldn't hear their Alpha's defeated tone. "Too many ships, not enough time. The wall's only ten dragonlengths high, and when I say dragon I mean Terrible Terror. Most of the Gronckles are on Dark Deep for the summer and we have no way of contacting them. I wouldn't risk even a Changewing to those catapults." I knew he was right. "Basically we're doomed unless Berk gets here soon."

Toothless stumbled to a halt on the landing pad, his right foreleg injured by a close shave with a ballista. "I'm fine." he muttered before I could say anything. "We've lost enough limbs between us." he added in a grim attempt at humour. Dragons came down left and right around us, most with minor injuries. The worst affected were flown to safety by Aevar's group. "Okay, head count!" I called. "Anyone missing?"

"Almost everybody's accounted for. We lost two Nightmares, seven insane Zipplebacks, three Nadders, a Razorwhip and a Raincutter to Hunter fire." Sleuther recited. "They're not dead!" he quickly added, seeing our horrified expressions. "Just captured, most of them except Dreamwater,  Kyra and Kaila. And Iggy's missing. Damn (dam hehe) fool Terror flew off before we could stop her. Trying to get a message to Dark Deep. No one saw her go down."

My eyes closed with pain. Iggy, Sharpshot's mate, had always been daring. We could only hope that she's still alive. Adding her to the total, that made fifteen losses. "Fifteen too many." I muttered. "Where are the Vikings?"
"Meatlug's human is with her at the wall." Garff piped up. "The crazy ones are booby-trapping the ground accesses to the infirmary!" Skyheart yelled. Leave it to the twins to help in the most Loki-ish way possible. "And the egotistical one is helping them." Okay, that's unexpected.

"Astrid and Stormfly got knocked down by a catapult." Aevar groaned, coming to an unsteady landing beside us. "She's in the infirmary, cursing really loudly and no one really knows how to fix humans. Why would anyone want to invoke Thor's underpants?" Sounds like something Astrid would do.
Poor Aevar looked like she was about to fall down. Toothless looked her over. "You need rest."
"But..." she protested. The Night Fury cut her off. "You'll be no help to anyone if you work yourself to death. Go sleep and let someone else take over." I stifled a laugh. Toothless mothered everyone.

No one dead, but fifteen captured and twice that severely injured. Not a single casualty on Viggo's side. And the barrier won't be finished in time, not with only three Gronckles and a half-asleep Grump. As I said, we can't win.

And then the tables turned.

A V-shape in the sky, silhouetted against the rising sun. A wing of large dragons, lead by one small one.

Sharpshot knew it first, calling out an ecstatic greeting to his mate. Because Iggy had done the impossible. She'd brought the Gronckles back from Dark Deep. The Hunters manning the catapults couldn't shoot straight with the sun in their eyes, and they passed by before any could be taken down. After this, Iggy would be hailed as a hero.

She touched down beside us, the Gronckles following her. "You needed help?" I was speechless. "How..."
"She said the Edge was under attack." Raina shrugged. "So we came."
Salvation on the wings of sunrise.

Now, we have a fight.
