Expect a disappointing end...

HER HEART pounded achingly as she crept her way out of the house filled with boisterous laughter, waiting for the clock to tick midnight. It was New Year's eve after all.

The icy air hugged her skin like a blanket full of needles. She ignored the pain and the shiver she felt, gulping a good amount of Champagne she grabbed earlier.

Her steps were soundless against the snow ground. She could have gotten frostbite, and her Ian would have scolded her for doing such reckless acts—going out in the bloody snow for God sake, but she could care any less. He was gone.

Airen had planned many times of ending her life, but the moment she was about to pull the act, it made her think twice as if her Ian would return back home into her arms.

She threw herself to the pile of snow carelessly, wishing she would die peacefully if her Ian would not return.

She looked up and couldn't see a single star tonight as if the mother earth mourned her loss as well.

Why did God have to punish her? What has she done wrong? She was a God-fearing woman and should be blessed with love and happiness, and yet, here she was, mourning for her lost fiancé.

She shook into sobs like she did a thousand times since she received the devastating news.

"W-why, God?" Her chin trembled. "This should be our wedding night. What have I done to deserve this pain? Of all the people, why him?" The sadness shot through her that she could barely bear even the freezing point had never made it numb.

The fireworks erupted the sky with thousands of colors twinkling above her. She raised the Champagne bottle. "See you on the other side, my love. H-happy New Year." In the same moment, she closed her eyes, welcoming the darkness surrounding her.

A heavy nudge awakened herself from a deep slumber. A strong scent of mud and fresh earth hit her nostrils. Thuds of footsteps and clinking of metals reached her ears.

"Lass, wake up." An unfamiliar voice with a thick accent made eyes flutter open. "Why on bloody earth are you wearing this thing?"

She sighed. "At least I'm not naked."

"Give me your coat, Alfred." And who is Alfred?

"You better wake up, lass. Now!"

She blinked for a brief a moment to see a fine classic red military dress blocking the sunlight. Had she fallen asleep during a costume party?

Finally, she lifted her chin and met the forest-green eyes that stunned her in awe.
