You Complete Me

Chapter 10: Love

Batman gave a small yelp of surprise. "What?! You... loved... me?"
"Yes, Batman. And not only loved, by the way, but..."
"Love?"
"Well, if you'd have let me finish..." replied the Joker wearily.
"That's what I came to talk to you about." exclaimed Batman.
Joker finally looked up. "Did you know?"
"No. I came to tell you that I loved you."
A sigh escaped Joker's lips. "Look, Batman, I can't deal with jokes right now. I know that's extremely out of character for me, but I tire of characters. Keep them thinking, you know?"
"Joker..." Batman reached out and took the other man's hand, his voice breaking. "I would never lie to you. I love you."
For the first time that visit, Joker smiled. "I love you too, Batman."
Batman began to cry. Joker took him into his arms and shushed him, telling him it would all be okay. Now they had each other, it would all be okay.
"P-promise me you'll get out?"
"Anything for you."

The Joker stuck to his promise. He broke out of Arkham Asylum just two days later. Of course, the Arkham guards called in Batman, and Joker had left a message for Batman on the wall of his cell. It said; 'You know where to go. The place I was born.'
Now, the guards were saying something about working out the Joker's real identity, and finding his childhood home. But his love was right. Batman did know where to go, and everything the guards were saying was just irrelevant background noise. Batman turned and stormed out of the room as quickly as he came. He was vaguely aware of the guards and the Commissioner calling him, but they didn't matter now. All that mattered was getting to the Joker. But he had to do something first.

Batman swung over rooftops with his grappling hook, until he reached the police building. There were stairs down there on the roof, but they were padlocked.
'Oh well.' thought Batman, and proceeded to kick it down.
