Bruce had made up his mind. He was going to request a meeting with the Joker, and tell him how he felt. Bruce was scared, of course, but, the way he saw it, what did he have to lose? The Joker was in a mental asylum, so if he told anyone they wouldn't believe him, and he wasn't getting out any time soon to make things weird between them anyway.
He rang up Arkham at once, and the receptionist picked up almost immediately.
"Hello, this is Arkham Asylum, home of the craziest and looniest baddies to walk the streets of Gotham City!"came the cheery voice on the other end, "How can we help you today?"
"Hello, I want to schedule an appointment with an inmate. My name is Batman."
"Oh, uh, of course. Let me just see... who is it you would like to visit?"
"Um..." Batman coughed. "The Joker."
"Okey-dokey, let me just get that down in my book here for you... we have an open spot tomorrow, at three o'clock."
"Ok, thanks. See you then." Bruce put down the phone hurriedly. He was breathing heavily and his hands were shaking.
Suddenly, Alfred coughed politely.
"Are you alright, sir?"
Bruce jumped. He had not heard the older man come into the room. "Uh, yes, thank you, Alfred. I'm fine."
"Are you sure, sir?" Alfred pressed. "You look rather... scared."
"Well, see, the truth is, I'm going to tell him how I feel, and I was making an appointment to see him just then. Speaking of which, Computer?"
"Yes, Mr Batman, sir?" came the automated reply.
"Make a reminder that I have to be at Arkham Asylum at three o'clock tomorrow."
"Yes, sir."
Bruce turned back to Alfred stood in front of him, and asked, "Anyway, Alfred, you were saying...?"
"Yes, sir, I was merely inquiring about your wellbeing."
"Ah, well, thank you, Alfred. I am terrified, but I'll be fine. Bruce forced a smile onto his face, and walked off before his father figure could see it turn into one of fear and anguish.
