Come they told me pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
our newborn king to see pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
Oh great, a king? I suppose he'll demand tribute. I'll have to leave mum and my newborn brother unprotected and lose time running errands for coins, lose the ability to feed them. Kings don't care about us ordinary folk!
Our finest gifts we'll bring pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
to lay before the king pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
rum-pum-pum-pum
rum-pum-pum-pum
Gifts? Where am I supposed to get gifts? I can't even afford lunch! But if I don't go they might arrest me – then what will happen to the others? They might take mum away, or the baby!
So, we'll honour him pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
when we come.
Why does a king want anything from me? Doesn't he already have more than I will ever have? If a baby can be a king, then why not my little brother?
Baby Jesus pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
I am a poor boy too pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
This is no king, this is a baby in rags in the straw. Look at his little screaming face. He is angry that this world has kings and demands for tribute, while his mum looks almost as tired as my mum. at least he still has a dad. His dad looks like he wants to protect him, find him food and keep him safe.
I wish we still had a dad. Oh well, he doesn't have a big brother like me though. He doesn't have everything!
I have no gift to bring pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
that's fit to give a king pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
rum-pa-pum-pum
rum-pa-pum-pum
You're crying so much little baby. You wish you had a big brother like me don't you? To cheer you up?
Shall I play for you pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
on my drum?
I'll play quietly, I have learned how to do that. I'll play the rhythm that my little brother likes. If you were older I would make you laugh with the funny music...I am good at that.
Mary nodded pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
the ox and ass kept time pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
You're no king little baby, you are cold and hungry and poor like me. I'll give you my best music ever. I'll play for your parents, for the animals huddling so close for the warmth.
My family...we huddle like that too.
I played my drum for him pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
I played my best for him pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
rum-pa-pum-pum
rum-pa-pum-pum
Thank you for listening, little baby, but I do need to go to work now or maybe steal something for dinner. I also have a little brother to support you know.
Then he smiled at me pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
me and my drum.
What is that your mum is saying? Do I want some food? Are you crazy, of course I want food! But I won't eat without Mum, she needs it to feed our baby you know.
Oh little baby, I really DO like your parents. It was so kind of your dad (and the donkey of course) to take me home and send some food for the others as well. Maybe if I get enough coins tomorrow to earn me some free time I'll come past and drum for you again.
Got no time for kings, but you...you're one of us!
