Thoughts On Harumi from Ninjago

Note- I have not seen the latest episodes of Ninjago, this is based on what we saw in seasons 8-9.

Generally, Harumi is a pretty weak character. In my opinion, she's only mildly compelling and fits into a lot of tropes (I mentioned this briefly in my review of White). Despite this, she still shines as the best Ninjago villain the show has to offer.

Harumi's a good villain in a show of average to mildly bad villains. The motives of a villain are really what makes them interesting (another reason White is great- She has pretty understandable motives. Thanos does too. Messed up but understandable). Like White, Harumi's motives are almost human. We can see ourselves in her situation, making the same choices she did.

Despite this, Harumi's still got a ton of character points I'm not to fond of- for starters, the 'seductress' trope I mentioned in my white review. Harumi, instead of using brute force on her opponent, decided to win his trust and his heart and the rest is history. While this makes for an interesting plot, it's a slightly overused trope and is kinda sexist. I'm also not pleased in how she does, because I'm always up for a redemption arc.

One of the key elements that makes our Rumi shine is the complete and utter lacking of character that the other Ninjago villains have. The primary antagonists of seasons 1,2,3,4,6, and 7 all share the same boring goal- take over Ninjago. It's happened like 50 times so far. Characters like Chen are barely memorable. I honestly forgot the overlord existed when writing this. You can't have immense evil if they've got no personality. An exception to this is Morro, I think he's tied with Harumi for best villain of the series.

Anyways, that's my tea on Harumi from Ninjago. Still doing requests on character reviews.
