CHAPTER 3
I woke up, feeling dazed, with my vision blurred and a light shining above me. As my vision cleared up, I began to see my surroundings. I was in a room that was relatively small. The walls were made of concrete and the door was made out of metal. Just like the door I saw before I got knocked out. I was lying on dirty old mattress that was quite uncomfortable but I was grateful that I wasn’t lying on the rough stone floor.
I lay on the mattress for good hour before a sudden loud bang made me jump. The metal door creaked open, revealing a man with a nicely built body. He opened his mouth and a gruff voice came out and said “Come along then”
He led me through a series of corridors until we ended up in a large room with a relatively large round table at the centre of the room. Approximately fourteen people stood around the table. Seven men along with seven women. On the table was a map that seemed like a map of the city. On the map were little statues that had the form of a soldier. As I stood in the room, the fourteen people started to notice me. Before long, everyone in the room was staring at me. Some with empathy, others with hatred. “What is this boy doing in our conference room?” said one of the men around the table. Suddenly, a man emerged from the shadows. He had hazel brown eyes, a shaggy beard and untamed hair. It was the homeless man who brought me here. I stared at him but before I was able to say anything, he raised his hand and said “Please, hold your questions, insults and anything else you have stored up in that little brain of yours till the end. The reason I’ve brought you here is to recruit you. As you can see, we are at war. I understand that you are not from our time and you know nothing of what is going on with the world but I assure you that it will all be clear soon enough. You came to this time using the machine you so lovingly called Steve but I must tell you that Steve is an old model that can only transport you into the future. It can’t transport you back into the past.”
“So you’re telling me, that I can’t go home?” I snapped at him, unable to contain my emotions any longer. He merely stared at me blankly and said “You will be sent to the training fields next week, at first light. I suggest you prepare yourself.” And with that, he left the room. I stared angrily at the fourteen people around the table, daring them to talk any more than they should. One person didn’t get the hint. A woman about my age approached me. She had sapphire blue eyes, flowing amber hair and high cheekbones.
“Don’t mind him. He’s usually a caring old man. Welcome to the army” she said and left the room.
