♡ Chapter Seven - Whatever Yoy Say ♡
Adelaide sat on the steps in the entranceway, her head in the palm of her hands. Her mind felt numb, she couldn't fathom what had just happened. The world around her was silent as she sat.
"You can't feel it anymore can you?" The man's voice arose.
"Feel what?" Adelaide looked towards him.
"The pain." He sat next to her. "I told you I would help you get rid of it, take control again."
"You left out the part about killing a man as well." She rolled her eyes are him and looked to the ground again.
"All with your best interests in mind," He took her chin in his hand and turned her head to look towards him. "I promise." He let out a comforting smile and she let out a slight smile as she sniffled. He wasn't lying, it did take away the pain. It doesn't hurt as much anymore to think of that day. He let go of her chin and looked forward. His gaze locked on something outside the window. She just looked at him. Why does he want to help me? She wondered. He seemed to know every detail about her without her having to tell him anything, but she didn't know really anything about him other than what he looks like. Even then she couldn't figure out much from his appearance. He was a hard man to read and she racked her brain so many times trying to figure him out.
"After all that," She said breaking the silence. "Can I finally know your name?" She continued to look at him. He turned his head and his eyes met hers. He didn't say anything. "Please." She looked into his deep blue eyes. He turned away and continued to look out the window off into the distance.
"You can call me Hartley" he replied. "Your car should be here soon to take you back to your flat." With that, he got up and walked up the stairs.
"Is that is?" She asked. "You just wanted me to shoot him?" Adelaide was confused. Was that all he wanted with me? She wondered. That was it?
"For now yes." He called from the top of the stairs.
____
The car stopped just outside of her flat. She looked out the window, people walking up and down the street. None of them aware of what she had done, her chest tightened. The door swung open and she slid out. She turned to Buckley who stood beside the car.
"Thanks, Buckley." She smiled at him and he nodded. She turned to look around her, she couldn't help but feel like everyone's eyes were on her, that they knew what she had done less than a few hours ago.
"Miss Adelaide?" Buckley said. She turned to look back at him.
"Yes?"
"Hartley wanted you to have this." He pulled a small box from his pocket. It had a red bow placed on top.
"Thanks." She took it from him and smiled. With that Buckley turned to get back in the car and drive away. Adelaide stood on the curb looking down at the small package for a moment.
She took the lid off of the box. She was surprised by what was inside of it, it was a flip phone. Why? She questioned. She took to phone out and held it in her hand examining it. At that moment the phone began to buzz. She flipped it open, to reveal a new text message. It read,
'I will be in touch Adelaide - H '
She closed the phone and walked up to her flat.
____
The sound of her alarm pierced through the air. Slowly she regains consciousness, raising out her arm to turn off the alarm. It had been a week since her last encounter with Hartley. She found sleeping difficult, most nights she sat awake. That day wouldn't stop replaying in her head. Never in her life, she thought she was capable of something such as that and yet she didn't regret it. She had made him pay for what he did to Lyla.
Finally, she rolled out of bed ready to start her day. She sat on her window sill looking out onto the streets below, a cup of coffee in her hands. Most days she stayed in rather than going out, she just sits and waits for the call. Nothing. Hartley had almost disappeared like he was a dream once again. The phone sat beside her and she just watched and waited. He made such a big deal about needing her and yet he was just like a ghost of the past.
Ding.
The phone lit up with a notification. Almost spilling her coffee Adelaide sat up and looked at the phone. Can it be? She wondered. The slight bit of happiness subsided and was soon replaced with fear. What did he want from her this time? Was it going to be like the last? She put her coffee down and picked up the phone. She stared at it for a moment before flipping open the screen and opening the text message.
'Being inside so much isn't good for you you know. -H '
Like he knows what's best for me, she thought. After a week of silence, this is what he decided to finally say? Seriously? Just at that moment, another notification appeared.
'It's time for a walk. -H.'
What? She thought. At that moment an envelope was slid under the door to her flat. She sat up and walked towards the envelope on the floor. Inside she found a picture of a man and a note. 'Follow him. Research him.' followed by an address. She sighed and walked to her closet.
"Looks like we are going out today." She said to herself.
