Los Angeles Airport

'Camila wake up! We are about the board soon.' I was woken by my mother holding a steaming cup of coffee in her hand. My muscles were rigid after snoozing on the stiff airport chair, stretching I grabbed the cup of coffee out of her hand and took a long sip, letting the liquid gold burn my dry throat. My mother smiled down at me, a fake smile almost sorry, a smile I wasn't willing to return. Picking up my bags I walked onto the plane dreading the next 14 hours of uncomfortable silence.

14 hours later

Saying the flight was awful was probably the biggest understatement of the century, forget the awkwardness between mum and I, there was a baby squealing through the whole flight and the food tasted like dog's breakfast. If only mother had stayed with her 2nd or 3rd husband-it's hard to keep track-then we would be in business class. Silently I picked up my luggage and loaded it onto the bright yellow taxi, looking around at Melbourne airport. It was different from what I expected it to be, for starters there were no kangaroos bouncing around or deadly spiders. There was an abundance of high rise buildings, metal crawling their way up and tainting the perfect blue sky but even then the tallest building-the highest achiever- had been stopped dead in its tracks never really able to reach the stars. I observed the people, minding their own business, boring people faking smiles as they watch their loved ones go. There was no one to see mum and I off, not that I expected there to be. Australia was another one of mothers last-minute decisions just like the time we moved from France, this time it was supposed to be different. We were going to spend the rest of our lives here, I knew it wasn't going to play out like that. In a few months time, we would be in another state then another country. For all of you that think I'm joking, I get to say 'I told you so' in the near future.

'Come on Camila, get in the taxi, what are you staring at?' Mother said opening the door for me,

I walked to the other side of the taxi, 'oh just looking for Sydney, that's where we will be in a couple of months, right?' I snapped as I slammed the car door. Mum slid in next to me and rolled her eyes,

'It will be different this time, I promise.' she whispers placing her hand over mine. I pull my hand away from her lousy grip and plug my headphones in, drowning out the rest of the world. Eyeing the city from the dirty window I come to the conclusion that this does not feel like home, it never will.
