Jack Avery
I wake up on Monday morning late for school. Great. My day's already off to a great start. I shower and change into a black hoodie, black jeans, and white converse. I skip breakfast that morning like I always do, and walk out to my car. I drive to school and as soon as I walk in, the bell rings, signaling that I'm late. I shove my jacket in my locker and walk to homeroom. The teacher starts the 'late' lecture but it just goes completely over my head. I sit in the back of the class and wait for the bell to ring.
Zach Herron
Jonah, Corbyn and I are all sitting in homeroom together when a boy walks in late. I'd never seen him before. He has curly brown hair and brown eyes. The teacher goes to talk to him, but he just walks right past her and to the back of the room. He completely ignores her and just sits there.
"Well, now that Mr Avery has joined us, you can all just work on some of your homework that we all know the majority of you, did not do."
Avery. Nice name, I just wish I knew his first name.
"Hey, Daniel told me that we're gonna have a project in history and we have to work in groups of 2. Corbyn and I kinda already wanted to work together so you have to find a partner. Sorry, man." Jonah says.
"It's alright. I can find someone else." I say with a smile.
The bell rings and we all walk out. I hang out with Jonah, Corbyn, and Daniel in the hallway during our passing time.
"Do either of you know who that kid who walked in late to homeroom was?" I ask Jonah and Corbyn.
"I think his name is Jack or something," Jonah says shrugging. "I don't really know. why?"
"Just wondering," I say shaking my head
The truth was I wanted to find out who he was. He seemed interesting I guess.
We all got to our history class on time and waited for the teacher to come in. She does just as the bell rings and starts class.
"You all have a group project due in 3 and a half months, worth 47% of your grade. You will pick a topic from the board and complete it efficiently. It is a 2-person project and I've decided against my better judgment to let you pick your partners. Choose wisely." Is all Mrs. Lahey says before sitting at her desk.
Jonah walks over to Corbyn's desk and starts working with him. I turn in my seat and see most of the students in the class are already in groups. Then someone in the corner catches my eye. It's that same kid who walked in late to homeroom. He's listening to music and drowning out the noise. He doesn't look like he was at all interested in this class or anything really. But something about him was just interesting, so I get up, and walk over.
Jack Avery
I'm just waiting for this stupid class to be over when someone sits next to me. It's none other than Zach Herron. He's one of the insanely popular kids. Basketball star, academic role model, golden boy. Why he was talking to me, I have no idea. He'd never even noticed me before. I take my earbuds out and give him weird look.
"I'm-"
"I know who you are," I say, cutting him off.
"Oh, well I just wanted to know if you wanted to be partners." He says, his smile faltering for a second.
"Why would you want to be partners with me? We're from completely different sides of the social spectrum and I don't even know how you know me." I say
"You seem interesting." He says shortly, shrugging.
I roll my eyes and shake my head. "Fine. Whatever. I'll get it done so you don't have to be seen with me." I say.
"I-"
The bell rings before he can get his sentence out. I grab my bag and walk out. I avoid Zach the rest of the day which wasn't easy considering we had the majority of our classes together. How I never noticed that I have no idea. I thought that today I was gonna get away without having my ass kicked by Mark Blunt, but as I walked out of school for the last time, I was proven to be very mistaken.
"Well, if it isn't our favorite emo?" Mark says, walking over with his group of friends.
"Can we seriously not do this today? I have to get home." I say sighing and rolling my eyes.
"You don't get to decide that, Avery." He growls, looking down at me.
I usually have a little time to react or try and run before he makes a move, but not today. He punches me in the face and I fall over. He and his friends gang up on me. Two of them hold me up while Mark hits me. I can already feel my eye swelling and blood in my mouth.
"Hey! Hey! Let him go!" I hear someone yell. The two guys let go of my jacket and I fall on the ground face up. I cough and more blood comes out of my mouth. I try to breathe and roll over on my side.
Zach Herron
"What the hell do you want, Herron?" Mark asks. "Why do you even care what happens to this loser?"
"Just leave him alone. Or do you wanna be suspended again? Oh wait, you've had enough suspensions that the next time, they get to expel your ass. Just get out of here." I say crossing my arms.
He looks like he's gonna say something else, but doesn't. He just scoffs, nods at his friends, and they all walk off. I walk over and kneel next to Jack.
"You Ok?" I ask.
"Just dandy," Jack says, spitting blood on the ground. He groans and stands up.
"Right, sorry. Uh, do you need help getting home?" I ask.
"No. You've done enough. Someone might see you so I'll just leave, save you the embarrassment." He says, picking his keys up off the ground and turning to walk away.
I grab his arm and he turns.
"I don't care about that. You shouldn't drive like this. Your eye is like, swollen shut. Let me give you a ride. It's just a ride." I say. "I'll even drive your car," I say with a smile.
He thinks and sighs. "Fine, whatever. Just a ride."
I smile and nod. "Come on."
