"It started a few years ago. I was in ninth grade when my father found out I was gay. He used to beat me because of it. It was either me or my little sister and I wasn't gonna let him hurt her so... Anyway, he did that for a while and then he walked out. We hadn't seen him in forever until a month ago. When Zach drove me home one day, his car was in the driveway. I walked in and Isla, my little sister told me my parents were arguing in my mom's room so I went up, and opened the door to see my dad hit my Mom across the face. I ran over and stood between them because I couldn't let him hurt my mom. Then a few days later, he came back. I asked Zach to get my mom and sister out of the house and I stayed and fought. Then Zach showed up and thank god he did because I don't know what could've happened if he didn't. But then when my dad went to hurt him, all I could think about was protecting him. That night I realized how much I really cared about him. We went to pick up my mom and sister and Zach spent the night. Then we went ice skating with you guys and when we were at Chipotle, Corbyn found out. I made him promise not to tell you guys and I'm sorry, but I just wasn't ready to tell anyone. But last night, something happened and I needed to tell you guys everything." I say, messing with my hands while I'm telling them everything.
"It's alright, Jack. We understand." Jonah says. "Don't we Daniel?"
"Yeah. We do." Daniel says.
They both get off the couch and hug me.
"You don't have to go through any of this alone. Okay?" Jonah says, pulling away.
"Yeah. Thanks, guys." I say gratefully.
"So, what did happen last night that made you want to tell us this?" Corbyn asked.
"Oh, well I kinda had a panic attack and Zach tried to calm me down and well, he kinda, sorta, might've kissed me." I stutter out.
"Oh my God, that's so great you guys!" Corbyn says, getting up and hugging Zach and me.
"Yeah, we're so happy for you guys," Jonah says hugging us again.
"Yeah, you're great together," Daniel says, following.
"Thanks, guys," Zach says smiling.
"Okay, I'm hungry. Let's eat." Corbyn says walking towards the table.
We laugh and follow him to the dining room. We eat and laugh for a while and I hear the front door open.
"Jack!" I hear Isla yell, running up and hugging me.
"Isla!" I say, mocking her with a smile on her face.
"I missed you." She says laughing.
"I missed you too. Want pancakes?" I ask.
"Uh huh." She says nodding. I grab one of the pancake containers from the bag and open it, setting it down in front of her.
"These guys are my friends. They're really funny and they're gonna stay here with you while Zach and I go talk to Mom. Okay?"
"Okay." She says. She sits next to Corbyn and Zach and I leave to talk to my Mom.
We find her putting her coat by the door.
"Hey, Mom. Can we uh, can we talk to you for a minute?" I ask.
"Sure. Anything." She says with a smile.
We all walk to the living room and Zach and I sit next to each other on the couch, my Mom in the big armchair.
"What is it?" She asks.
"So, how do you feel about Zach?" I ask.
"Well, I think he's, I think you're lovely." She says, turning to Zach with a smile on her face.
"Thank you, Mrs. Stanford," Zach says with a smile.
"Please call me Kristin." She says with a smile.
"Anyway, uh, we, um, we're, we're, we're dating." I stutter out.
"Oh, Jack that's great. And Zach I know you'll take good care of him. I'm really happy for you both." She says, getting this huge smile on her face.
She gets up and hugs both of us. "I know you'll make each other happy."
"Thanks, Mom," I say smiling.
We walk back to the dining room and eat with the rest of those guys and Isla. We're all laughing and talking when I realize we hadn't told Isla.
"Uh, Zach?" I whisper.
"What?"
"We gotta tell Isla."
"Do you think she'd understand?" He mutters.
"I don't know, but she still has to know," I answer.
"Okay. We'll tell her later." Zach says.
We all eat and hang out for most of the day, just hanging out with each other. The boys leave around 6 and Zach and are playing with Isla in her room.
"Isla?" I say.
"Yeah?"
"You like Zach right?" I ask.
"Yeah. He's one of my very best friends." She says in a 'duh' tone.
I laugh and hold Zach's hand in mine.
"Well, I really like Zach too. And he's gonna be around for a while because he's my boyfriend." I say slowly.
"Like mommy and daddy used to be?" She asks.
"Kinda like your mom and dad used to be. The difference is, I'll always be here for Jack." Zach says, putting his hand on mine.
"Well, that's good. 'Cause I really like Zach." She says smiling.
"Me too." I agree, smiling.
We spend the rest of the night playing with Isla until she had to go to bed for school tomorrow. I'm lying with Zach in bed when I had to ask him something.
"So, tomorrow we have school. What are people gonna say?" I ask, looking up at him.
I feel his arms tighten around me and he shrugs. "I don't know and I really don't care. All I know is that I want you. I want us." He rests his head against mine and sighs. "Look, I really, really like you, Jack. I don't care about anyone else."
"I really like you too Zach," I mumbled, sitting up.
"I'm here for you. Always."
"I promise you, I'll protect you with my life." I whisper.
"So will I." He murmurs before falling asleep.
