I don't know what time it was, or how long I've been passed out but I wake up in a hospital bed, an IV sticking out of my arm. Jack's sitting in the chair next to my bed, his head laid on the bed, hand on my leg, brushing his fingers against my jeans.
"Jack?" I say groggily.
His head shoots up and he looks up at me with red eyes. "I thought I lost you." He says standing and hugging me.
"What happened? How long have I been out?" I ask, sitting up slowly.
"Well, you've been out for 7 hours. And we don't know what-"
Then the doctor walks in. "Well, Mr. Herron, you were lightheaded because you haven't eaten in what looks like over 2 weeks. You were severally dehydrated. You'll be fine within the next few hours." He says.
"Thank you," Jack says.
"My pleasure."
He leaves and Zach turns to me. "Why weren't you taking care of yourself?"
"Why? Because you were in a damn coma for 3 weeks. I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep, I couldn't think." I ramble.
"That doesn't mean you can't take care of yourself." He says, holding my hand.
"Jack, I can't function without you," I mumble. "I love you too much."
"Zach, I love you too. But you've gotta take care of yourself."
"I'll be fine," I say.
"Stop messing with your IV," Jack says.
"It itches," I whine.
Then my mom comes in and I talk with her and Reese and Ryan. Jack gets a call and leaves the room to take it, a scared look on his face.
Jack Avery
I get a call. It's my father. I leave the room while Zach's talking to his family.
"How the hell did you get my number?" I ask angrily.
"Is that any way to talk to your father."
"I'm calling the cops," I say.
"I wouldn't do that. I can end pretty boy's life in a matter of minutes."
That makes me stop dead. What the hell does that mean?
"I know you're gonna do whatever you have to protect him so you're gonna do whatever I say, no questions asked. Got it?"
I sigh and shake my head. I've got no choice. I have to keep Zach safe. "Yeah. I got it."
"Good. Your first job is in a half hour. You need to take the duffel bag from the address I send you and take it to the second address."
"What the hell am I delivering?" I ask.
"Don't worry about it. Have fun."
Then the line goes dead. I walk back into Zach's room and sit by his bed.
"Listen, I gotta take off for a while. I'll be back soon, ok?"
"Where are you going?"
"I just gotta pick something up."
"Ok, I'll see you soon."
"I love you, bye," I say kissing his forehead.
"I love you too."
I tell my Mom I have to go get something for Zach so she won't ask questions.
I get in my car and drive to the address that was sent to me. I put my hood up and get out of my car. I pick up the backpack. I look inside and it's filled with different forms of contraband.
"Oh shit," I mumble. The text also says I can't drive my car around there so I sling the bag around my shoulders and start walking. Everything's going smoothly until I see red and blue lights. I start running and hide in an alley. I climb up a fire escape and lean as far into the wall as I can. The lights go by and after a few minutes, I move out. I drop the bag off and get back to my car as fast as possible. I text my Dad and tell him it's done. I get back to the hospital and back to Zach's room within the hour. Neither he or my mom asks where I've been. I'm in Zach's room when he finally says something.
"Ok, what's wrong?"
"What? Nothing." I answer.
"Jack-"
"Just drop it. Please?"
He sighs and shakes his head.
"Fine. Whatever."
I hate lying to him, I really do. But I have to protect him. No matter what.
Shorter than usual, but I'll be posting soon.
