3 Months Later; Jack Avery
Things were going really great between Zach and me. I mean, we hadn't seen my Dad in a while and Mark had left us alone. And winter was finally over, thank God. Everything was just perfect. Zach and I were hanging out in the hallway after school by his locker.
"The State finals are in 2 months. I'm so excited." Zach says, bouncing on the balls of his feet. "We've been practicing for so long."
I laugh and nod. "I promise I'll be there, cheering you on the loudest. This is a really great oppurtunity. Scouts are gonna be there for colleges and everything."
"Did I not tell you? The Scout for Harvard saw the semifinals game and that was one of the schools I had applied for. I got my acceptance letter 3 days ago. Full ride." He says with a huge smile.
"Oh my God. Zach, that's amazing! I'm so happy for you." I say, hugging him.
"What about you? What colleges have you applied for?" He asks.
"Uh, well since my grades are good, and I have a good GPA, my mom helped me apply early for Stanford, UCLA, and Harvard. And I have some other back up schools in mind. I sent out applications like 5 months ago. " I say, leaning against the lockers. "But I've got my heart set on Harvard. It's always been a dream of mine to go there. Before I met you, I didn't even think I was gonna go to college."
"Hey," Zach says, holding my hand. "You're gonna get into an amazing school. I know it."
I smile and nod. "Thanks, Zach."
He returns the smile, takes my chin between his thumb and finger, and kisses me. "Anytime."
He checks his phone and sighs. "We should probably get to your house. We still have to finish that project. It's due in a few days."
"Yeah. All we gotta do is put it all together. I finished typing the notes last night." I say, shrugging my jacket on, as it was raining.
"Come on. Let's go." He says. He takes my hand and we walk out of school. He holds my hand over the center console, our fingers intertwined. Soon, we get to my house and walk inside. I can hear Isla and my Mom upstairs, laughing. Zach and I make our way up to my room and work on the project. Like an hour and a half later, my Mom comes in.
"Hey, Isla and I are about to head out. Get dinner. Wanna come? Or do you just want us to bring you something back?" She asks.
"We'll come. Just let me get my jacket." I say.
She smiles and nods, walking back out. I grab the black jacket and Zach walks with me downstairs.
Isla was getting her jacket from her room when we hear a car pull up, music blasting from the speakers. A few seconds later, the door bangs open, revealing my dad. Completely wasted.
"Zach, please go make sure Isla's safe. Take my mother with you."I whisper to him.
"Jack, we went over this. I told you I'm not leaving you." He says back.
"Zach I promised you I would protect you with my life," I argue.
"Jack, no."
"Then get them safe. Please just get my family safe."
He takes a breath and nods. "Okay. I'll get them upstairs."
My Dad's back is turned to us, locking the door. Zach quickly gets my mom upstairs, and then it's just me and him. My father finally turns to me, an evil glint in his eyes.
