she had a garden

full of so many flowers

that she loved as if they were her own children.

i saw the love in her eyes,

and she had gotten one behind her ear.

just a small sunflower, but it was

cheery.

kind.

warm.

"it's mine." she had explained,

tipping the watering can over as the sun

beamed,

burned,

nurtured.

"i grew it from who i am,

as a gardener

as a person."

"that's a pleasant thing to think about a flower on your skin."

"you don't enjoy too much of the peaceful and self-help stuff, do you?"

"not when i don't have anything inside me that needs help."

she had giggled, shook her head, and fed her plants.

"you are a piece of work yourself."

i could only smile.

anything she did made me smile.
