"hey, jonah. can i talk to you for a minute?" jonah's mother asked.

"of course." he said as he sat down in front of her. "what's wrong?"

"uh- jonah, your father has cancer. he's getting a surgery on tuesday."

"but- that's the day i leave for pennsylvania."

"that's what i wanted to talk to you about." she added. "i know how much you want to meet jack, but please, you need to stay. we don't know if he's gonna make you through the surgery, and we need you here in case he doesn't. i'm so sorry, i know you wanna see him. but please, i'm begging you."

jonah's eyes started to fill with tears.

"i'll stay." he simply replied.

"thank you, baby." his mother said as she kissed the top of his head, starting to cry as well.
