Emily's POV

"Fields! What's going on with you today? You told me you were working toward dropping two seconds and instead, you add two seconds onto your time! With our meet against Stonebrook in a week, this is unacceptable!" Mr. Conley yells from the deep end.

I take a deep breath and slam my fist into the water, angry with myself. "I'm sorry, Coach. I'm out of it today, but I'll be back to normal tomorrow." I answer weakly before pulling myself out of the pool.

As I stare mindlessly at the shower wall, I begin to rack my brain for things that I did wrong. Was it my form? No, I don't think it was any different than normal. What about my breath intakes? I don't think so either. Maybe it's just the nerves. I sigh and reluctantly walk out of the shower, throwing on my towel and grabbing my belongings. My phone buzzes loudly and I look down immediately to see who it is. Ali.

Ali: Are we still on for tonight? :) I miss you

Me: You saw me two hours ago babe. But yep, I can't wait.

Ali: I miss you even after a minute. See you tonight xx

I smile to myself - how Ali manages to make me feel better even when I'm in the worst of moods still astounds me to this day. In fact, she invited me to her house tonight to watch a movie with her and Lucas. This way, Lucas and I can get to know each other for the short-time that he's staying. I decide to surprise Ali by picking her up a slice of red velvet cake from her favorite bakery on the way to her house. I adjust my hair in the mirror and walk up to her door before knocking softly. To my surprise, Lucas opens the door and smiles widely when he sees me.

"Hey Emily! Nice to see you!" Lucas booms loudly. Within a couple seconds, Ali rushes to the door and gives me a brief hug before pulling back to acknowledge the object in my hand.

"You bought me cake?" Ali asks confusedly.

"Yeah because you're always taking about cake here cake there." I laugh softly, handing the box over to her.

"Since when do you like cake, alligator?" Lucas cuts in, throwing a teasing look at Ali.

I watch as Ali blushes a light pink and slaps his arm playfully. "Shut up, you've mentioned it like thirty thousand times since you've been back."

"Alligator?" I ask with furrowed eyebrows.

"Yeah, like Ali-gator," Lucas explains. "Everyone calls her Ali and that's so typical so my name for her is Alligator. Cute, isn't it?"

I laugh quietly and look down at my feet. "Yeah, cute." I feel a twinge of jealousy as I watch Lucas wrap his arms around Ali and the two of them carry on into the kitchen, laughing at some inside joke. I know that I told Ali I wasn't jealous of him, but his comment about his nickname for Ali sort of made me feel a bit envious. And what was the deal with his comment on her liking cake? Did she not like cake before or something?

"Em! You're not just going to stand out there are you?" Ali calls out from the kitchen.

I look around dumbfounded, unaware that I had just been staring into space for the past thirty seconds. I gulp down my previous thoughts and plaster on a fake smile. "No, I'm coming."

"Alright so what movie do you guys want to watch?" Ali asks as she hovers over the computer, scrolling mindlessly on Netflix.

"Let's watch a comedy!" I answer happily.

"Hmm..how about horror?" Lucas suggests, grinning devilishly at Ali.

Ali's eyes flicker between the both of us and our eyes stare right back at hers.
