"Do you have a car?"

"No, but we can rent one."

"I don't know, it's a really long drive."

"Oh, well that's okay. I love road trips."

We rented a car and headed to my parents house. She insisted on driving, I'm not sure if it was kind gesture or if it was for safety. Taco was in the back seat but ended up in my lap. We talked and laughed and listened to music when there was silence. Before the daylight had gone, I caught glimpses of her eyes which seemed to capture the sun and all of its warmth. She seemed without error and so...pure. I felt so calm that I dosed off and awoke as soon as we arrived. It was nightfall by now and I began to grow a sickening feeling in my gut, I had no idea how my parents would react when they saw me. I hesitated at the door, when a reassuring hand grabbed mine and rang the door bell. No one came to the door but it was obvious that they were home. I used my spare key and said

"I'm Home!"

I said it jokingly and not to my surprise, I received looks of fear and concern. No one said anything, but the confusion was most definitely there. Amelia stepped forward and rather bluntly said.

"You have made a mistake as parents and therefore, have failed your son. With as much respect as I can give to you, you have lied and this has negatively effected this human."

A small tear ran down my mothers face as she turned away. My father on the hand, grew a grimacing scowl in frustration. I stood in mear shock of what she had said. I felt the sharpness of her words were maybe too harsh but somehow I knew they were true... and my parents did too. Still, she had seemed like such a calm and warm person before and this new side of her was very... shocking.

"Why are you here?" My mother asked still very concerned.

Amelia sat them down and explained to them all that she and I had discovered. There was silence again then I spoke,

"There has to be something that you haven't told me. If you haven't then there is no reason behind my despicable acts, I'm just a monster."

"You're not a monster!" My mother interjected. "We were just trying to protect you."

My father stopped her before she broke into tears. "How far back do your memories go?" He asked rather strangely.

"I don't know dad." I answered almost annoyed. "How come you can't just answer my question?"

I admit it was the wrong time for sarcasm but I was slightly angered that it was taking so long for me to find an answer. No one said anything but I felt the offended looks that were fired at me. My fathers lips pursed before he opened is mouth to tell me off... I knew the look well. So I spoke before he had the chance.

"I guess it was when I was four years old." I started. "When you gave me your lucky beanie. I don't remember much but I remember being really sad and scared, I don't know why though."

I watched my fathers face change from red, back to white. He took a deep breath in and sighed heavily as he leaned back. He shot a glance at my mother before turning back to me.

"That," He started. " was moments before we signed the adoption papers."

Amelia sat back and her face relaxed. She acted as though she had known all along and was just trying to get it out of them. I said nothing, I didn't feel like there was anything that could be said. I stood, rubbed my neck, and left. I waited in the car, for Amelia, and stroked my hand over Taco's head. After about thirty minutes, she came out of the house with papers in her hand. We didn't speak. She drove us to the nearest motel where we silently agreed to stay the night.
