Wait, you might not understand what he's thinking of.
In this world -- this reality, whatever you want to call it -- people are born with a ring on their finger. You can't get it off, no matter how hard you try. Trust Tom, people have tried. Whether it was a from torture or hate for their soulmate, people tried.
Oh, yes, he hasn't explained the soulmate part!
Every person, no matter their sexuality, have soulmates. Yes, even aromantic people have soulmates. The soulmates might be platonic, but whatever. Some people even have more than one soulmate -- a group of three people who love each other like nobody else can.
So, in general, the whole 'soulmate' bullshit system is pretty forgiving about who you might love.
What do the rings have to with soulmates, you might ask?
Well, it looks exactly like mood ring, but the 'mood' part isn't some trash based off your pulse; it's a 'magical' little system that lets you know what your soulmate is feeling.
Ugh.
They all have specific colors for each emotion(contrary to popular belief), and there have been studies on what each color meant.
Tom knew the basics(considering that they had a class in school learning all about your 'soulmates' and your ring), and to him, that's all that matters.
Gray for neutral, navy for sadness, pain for red, which changes depending on the intensity, yellow for happiness, flat red for anger, uhh...
There's a lot more, but Tom forgot about them all.
His ring was gray a lot.
Well, that's only from what he's seen, because he pushes his sweatshirt sleeve over his ring.
Why, you might ask?
He's a little shit who doesn't want to know about his soulmate. Now, was that so hard to guess?
