"I'm boooored.", Isabel said as she lay on the green grass, the limbs stretched out, staring into the blue sky.
"You should get a hobby.", Furlan commented, who sat cross-legged beside her and carved on a stick. It had been one of our free days and the fine weather had us lured outside. Now we were in one of the sprawling green spaces in front of Erwin Smith's estate, enjoying the warmth and the sun.
"Yeah, great idea.", Isabel said sarcastically, looking at Furlan, as if he had gone mad, " Should I start knitting or what?". Furlan then chuckled softly and shrugged.
"Knitting has a calming effect. Then maybe you would be a bit more balanced and would not be so irritable.", he teased her, whereupon she suddenly straightened up and glared at him.
"What does that mean?", she snapped, "Do you think I'm so moody?". The irony of her reaction did not really strike her self, I thought with a raised eyebrow as I watched my two friends drive each other crazy again.
"No! Not at all!", Furlan answered immediately with too obvious irony, so that even the sometimes rather obtuse Isabel had to notice. As expected, her cheeks turned red, which was always the case when she was upset about something.
"You stupid man!", she scolded, "If you have a problem with me, then say it directly to me.".
"We have endured each other for so long now. At some point I stopped complaining about you.", he replied with a cheeky grin. He was probably planning to be strangled by her here and now, I thought, for provoking Isabel so was suicide.
"You think you're the cleverest man alive, right?", she scolded, glaring at him angrily. She was about to get up and rush on Furlan.
"Stop that shit, nuisances.", I grumbled, throwing a small stone at Isabel's head. Puzzled that I was interfering, she stopped her motion and looked at me.
"But he started.", she said now insulted and I rolled my eyes and scowled at her.
"You behave like children.", I just said and stepped next to the two who were still crouching in the grass. As I came to a halt beside them, Isabel got up and looked at me slightly frustrated.
"Say that to the dumbass.", she complained and nodded to Furlan, who was still grinning stupidly, "He always strives to irritate me.".
I looked at her with raised eyebrows and sometimes felt with them like a father, trying to mediate between his two quarreling children. It was incomprehensible that they were bickering so often, because actually we all knew that we could never really be angry with each other for a long time.
"But you also let him provoke you again and again, idiot.", I held out to her and looked at her with a slightly annoyed look.
"Hey! That's not true!", she whisked again immediately and built up in front of me, as good as possible. But since Isabel was one of the few people actually smaller than me, I could look down on her contemptuously. Just before she could beat me with her fist half playfully, half seriously, I simply reached out a hand and pressed it against her forehead. I kept her at arm's length and since I was much stronger than her, she could not reach me anymore.
"Hey! That's unfair!", she complained and fidgeted, but did not really match my firm grip. Furlan laughed loudly behind her and seemed to find the sight of both of us very amusing.
