- Two years later -
An unmistakable, bad-tempered grumble sprang from my mouth. Annoyed, I looked through the guild. For once, however, it weren't my comrades from Fairy Tail who'd made me annoyed. Rather, a young guy I didn't even know was the reason. I leaned against the door frame of the entrance to the guild with my arms crossed, then looked out again at the path that led to the guild hall. They are also too late, it shot through my head grumpily and I snorted. That didn't make a good impression.
"Hey Levi! Are you our new bouncer?", Gajeel growled from behind me. I didn't even have to look at him to know he had his goofy grin on his face again.
"Shut up.", I growled, because I really had no nerve for such teasing. My gaze remained stubbornly on the path and I snorted annoyed again. I heard Gajeel come up to me, but still didn't look at him.
"Oh yes, right ...", he finally said with an amused voice, "Today, Wendy's on her date with ... what was the boy's name?". Immediately subconsciously, my fingers grabbed the flesh on my arms. Why were they so late?
"I don't care.", I grumbled, "If he doesn't treat Wendy well, he doesn't need a name anyway.".
"Hey, hey ...", Gajeel laughed soothingly next to me and slapped me briefly on the shoulder, "Relax. She is just at this certain age, there is nothing even you can do about it.". I just grunted irritably in response and heard how Gajeel finally withdrew. But even though I didn't want to admit it, Gajeel was right. Wendy could not remain forever the little girl she once had been. She grew more and more into a woman and this unfortunately brought a lot of other annoying things with it.
I shuddered for a moment, because if it continued like this, I would soon have an important conversation with her. Just the idea of having to somehow explain to her how exactly it worked between man and woman made me feel uncomfortable. Or maybe I would be lucky and she already knew it.
Then finally two figures approached the guild and immediately, I tensed again. They even held hands! As they got closer, I saw Wendy's beaming face. At least she's happy, it crossed my mind. I had already figured out some creative things I would do to the boy if he didn't treat Wendy well. I remained motionless in the door frame and waited more or less patiently until the two finally came to a stop in front of me.
Wendy's beaming smile faded a little when she looked into my face, but she was still happy. A delicate pink color lay on her face and it was obvious that today they had done more than just holding hands.
"Oh ... Hello Levi.", Wendy greeted me, "You didn't have to wait for me". I looked at her briefly before my eyes slowly wandered to the guy next to her. He was as tall as me, but that didn't stop me from piercing him with threatening looks. He looked quite lanky and had dark blond hair and a rather narrow face. When our eyes met, he blinked intimidated and I could clearly see that he began to tremble a little.
Granted, in a way I couldn't blame him either. After all, I must have looked quite terrifying to him with the long scar that had graced my face for two years. Since that day I have only been able to use my left eye and a noticeable, pink scar was emblazoned across my right eye down to my mouth.
"Um ... May I introduce you? This is Levi, my father.", Wendy said in the uncomfortable silence. When she introduced me like that, the boy in front of me literally broke out in a sweat. I already knew by now that Wendy would later scold me for intimidating him like that, but I didn't care. He should know that if he ever caused her distress, I wouldn't be easy for him.
"Your ... your father?", he asked in a frightened voice and briefly his gaze flicked to Wendy, almost incredulous. Wendy just replied with a weak smile and a shrug.
"Um ... well ... I'll go then. It was very nice, Wendy.", he now stammered and obviously reluctantly let go of her hand. Wendy also looked a little sad, but I would never allow the guy to stay here overnight. The two looked at each other awkwardly for a moment and it was obvious that they were briefly considering whether to kiss each other goodbye. Luckily for him, however, they decided to just wave before the guy half turned to leave.
"Goodbye. It was nice to meet you, Mr. ... Levi. ", he said goodbye to me.
"For you, it's Mr. Ackerman.", I growled and the boy nodded immediately, before he turned around and ran away from me a little too quickly.
"Pretty lanky.", I commented and immediately felt how Wendy punched me lightly in the side.
"You were way too mean, Levi.", she rebuked me, "What if he doesn't want to see me anymore because he's scared of you?". I rolled my eyes briefly and looked at her.
"Then he's not the right one for you anyway.", I answered her question and looked at her. She had grown a lot in the last few years and was only a little smaller than me. She was also prettier, and although I was proud to see her grow, it scared me at the same time.
"If it was up to you, I would never date anyone.", she grumbled with a pout. I shrugged indifferently. I had gotten through life without a relationship, so it wasn't essential to life. Still, of course, I knew that I would never be able to stop this course of events.
"I just want to take care of you.", I muttered and with a sigh she looked at me as if all hope was in vain. With a smile, she clutched my arm and looked at me with wide eyes.
"I know and that's nice of you too, but you really don't need to do that." , she said and looked at me mischievously, "But maybe I should get you a date so that you are distracted.". I scowled at her and narrowed my eyes briefly.
"Don't you dare.", I growled, but Wendy just giggled heartily and then leaned her head on my shoulder.
"You really don't have to worry about me.", she said in a softer tone and I sighed briefly. Of course, I was aware of this and, more than anything, I wanted her to be happy. Still, there was this stinging feeling that I just couldn't get rid of.
"Are you okay?", Wendy asked quietly and my left eye wandered over at her. She looked at me with a concerned look and for a moment I just looked back at her.
"Please don't just leave me alone someday, okay?", I said very softly. I didn't want to chain her to me, just don't! But my heart would not be able to take it if she slipped away from me more and more. What if she didn't want to have anything to do with me in a few years?
For a moment, Wendy's eyes widened and she gave me that innocent look. Then she smiled very slowly and tenderly and her grip on my arm tightened a little. Like a cat she pressed her head briefly even more against my shoulder and giggled happily.
"I promise.", she said gently, "I'll never leave you alone, Levi.". Her words were a balm for my soul and with a further sigh, I looked again straight into the distance. Sometimes I felt like a fool when I said something like that to her, but I didn't care about it.
The most important thing was that we would always be there for one another.
