I had a bad feeling about this whole thing, I thought as we ran. It had all been too easy and now we had actually lost those stupid documents. Erwin would not be very pleased.
My eyes shot to my two friends, who ran to my left and right. Little Isabel was amazingly nimble, which was probably mainly due to the fact that we were fleeing from a huge number of opponents.
We should have expected that we would encounter resistance somewhere, I thought gritting my teeth, as I looked back again. At Shiganshina they had ambushed us, in a considerable majority, and attacked us from behind. It was a miracle how we even survived that. But now they had the documents. It would have been pointless to try to get the documents back into our possession after all. The only thing that counted now was somehow getting back to Erwin safely.
I looked briefly at my friends again. They were both slightly injured, but were mostly able to move around without any problems. I also had a few wounds, but they weren't too bad.
"Shit ... how are we supposed to get the documents back?", I heard Furlan yell next to me as we ran on. It was amazing that his first thought was about those crappy documents while I was thinking more about how to get out of here alive.
"Idiot, we have to get to safety first.", I hissed at him from the side.
"But that's an important job.", Isabel called panting from my other side and I turned my head to look into her determined face, "We can't just let these bastards win!". Her fighting spirit emerged once again and, like Furlan, she seemed to put her own safety behind fulfilling the mission. But if we kept running and talking like that, we would soon run out of strength, I thought grudgingly. I glanced back quickly, but couldn't see any pursuers. When I looked ahead again, I pointed briefly to the left into the thicket.
"Follow me.", I called to my friends, who followed me unconditionally. After a few steps into the thicket, I finally stopped and listened, but couldn't hear any noises that suggested other people.
Breathing hard we now stood close together and immediately crouched down so as not to be discovered. The sweat ran down our foreheads and mixed with dirt and blood on my neck. Furlan and Isabel looked similarly battered, and their chests rose and fell at an abnormally rapid rate.
"We can take a breath here.", I said softly, but always kept an eye on the surroundings. Both of my comrades nodded in agreement and Furlan briefly wiped the sweat from his forehead before looking at me.
"We have to get the documents back. You know as well as I do that they are extremely important to Erwin, Levi.", Furlan said after taking a breath. Isabel nodded in agreement and I gritted my teeth loudly.
"It's too dangerous. They outnumber us by far.", I answered immediately and tried to change his mind.
"That didn't hold us back in the past either.", Isabel now intervened, "It's not the first time that we are outnumbered.".
"This is something else, Isabel.", I growled at her, trying to keep myself quiet. It pissed me off that my two friends only seemed to have this damn mission on their mind. Didn't they think at all?
"Indeed, they are actually much more than we are, but with the right tactics, anyone can be outwitted.", Furlan said and I felt like I was talking against a wall. I furrowed my eyebrows and looked at them alternately.
"Are you crazy?", I hissed at him, "It's way too risky. We can't do that.". Suddenly the eyes of my two comrades widened and they looked at me reproachfully, almost hurt. There was a moment's silence before Isabel raised her voice softly and looked me straight in the eye.
