Chapter XXV - A third possibility

"You are Levi?".

She know me? How did this fury know my name and why did it make her stop fighting? But anyone who was fool enough to do just that was himself to blame. I had grown up in the streets and was used to using my opponent's mistakes. So I took out one of my daggers with full force, but quickly, like the wind, she yanked up her sword, blocking my surprise attack. Big, astonished eyes stared at her. What kind of woman was that?

"I'm sorry I attacked you, but I couldn't be careful enough.", she said. Cconfused, I reduced the pressure on my dagger so that both of us slowly dropped our weapons, but I was still ready to use my weapon again every second.

"Who ... who are you?", Lucy asked behind me and to my astonishment the black-haired woman put her swords back into the scabbards that were attached to her belt.

"My name is Mikasa and I belong to Erwin Smith.", she answered and looked at me.

"Oh, really?", I immediately snapped, because I did not trust her. After all, it could also be a trap. Her eyes became quite cool and distant, but she kept looking at me.

"Yes, Erwin Smith. He told me to keep watch here and to make every intruder harmless.".

"Well, you've probably failed in this task.", Natsu giggled somewhere behind me, but neither I nor this Mikasa went into it.

"He also told me to bring a certain Levi and his comrades to him in case they should show up here.", she said and I raised an eyebrow. If I had not been last in our lineup, she might have killed one of us. Such a careless woman. But she spoke of instructions from Erwin and that she should even bring us supposedly to him. So maybe we were not too late, I tried to convince myself, but the pessimist in me could not quite accept this.

"So bring us to him.", Erza said in a loud voice to the woman named Mikasa. She gave Erza a quick look, then nodded and turned around.

"Follow me.", she said and as she began to walk we followed her silently, but with great caution. She led us down through innumerable corridors, until we finally were in the basement of the building. I had been here very seldom, especially since there were storage rooms. But I had never suspected that the basement of this estate was so large and spacious.

After a while, Mikasa finally stopped in front of a thick steel door and knocked exactly three times at slow intervals. A short time later the door was opened and a blond young man carefully peeks into the dark corridor. When he recognized the woman in front of him, he smiled somewhat relieved and stepped aside a little so we could enter.

"Oh good, it's you, Mikasa.", he said in a fair voice as we entered the room.

"Everything is alright, Armin.", she said and walked past him. The young, pretty petite blond man looked at us attentive and curious, while we were coming in and he closed the door behind us. We stood in a low but wide gray room. Only a few people stayed here, and I felt some of my tension drop off as my eyes fell on the man sitting behind a thin gray desk at the end of the room. There Erwin Smith sat and gave me a satisfied, weak grin as he slowly got out of his chair and walked around the desk.

"Good job, Mikasa.", he praised the young woman, "I knew I could count on you.". Mikasa nodded her thanks and stepped aside. Then Erwin looked at us.

"I'm sorry that our reunion must take place down here, but unfortunately we were forced to.", he greeted us. I let my eyes wander around the room. In addition to Erwin, this Mikasa and the man named Armin, there were two more people present. I even knew both of them, Hanji on the one hand, and Mike, on the other hand, a very stocky and silent man who had previously been responsible for Erwin's safety.
