Gwaine and Luna remained huddled together on the floor of the armory as the knights watched on in confused curiosity. Gwaine buried his face into his sister's hair, hiding his tears as the made their way down his cheeks. Luna held onto him like he was a lifeline, nestling herself as far into his familiar and safe grasp as she could.
Luna sobbed his name like a mantra into his chest.
"I've got you, Butterfly" Gwaine kept whispering into her hair.
Luna felt her heart breaking all over again as she clutched her brother to her. She couldn't believe it. Her brother. HER brother. He was alive, he was well, he was here. She didn't care how or why, all that mattered was that he kept holding her.
But it did seem to matter to Gwaine. He pulled his head away from hers, pretending his eyes weren't red and his cheeks weren't stained with tears.
"Luna" he whispered, his voice cracking. He cleared his throat and sniffled a couple of times.
"Butterfly," he tried again as Luna raised her gaze to meet her brother's. "What are you doing here? I-I thought you were dead."
Another wave of tears hit Gwaine as he lowered his head and left a lingering kiss on his baby sister's forehead.
Luna shook her head as she tried to find the words to tell her brother. To tell him that she alone was alive, but Jordan hadn't made it. To tell him that she saw their brother's and mother's and sister-in-law's dead bodies littering the ground. To tell him about the bandits and their abuse. To tell him that she had nightmares every night about him handing his bracelet to her and turning around to face the knights he knew he couldn't defeat. A sudden and unexpected surge of anger rushed through her
"You thought I was dead?" She cried as she jerked farther out of his grasp. "You thought I was dead? I'm not the one who- who- who tried to fight a whole goddamn army that I knew I couldn't beat! I'm not the one who was a stupid, overprotective idiot who tried to save everyone but myself! That was you, you- you-" Luna fizzled out in distress.
"You idiot?" Gwaine supplied for her with a slight, albeit, sad smile on his face.
"Yes!" Luna cried, this time in a timid, exhausted voice, void of all her previous anger. Her eyes re-flooded with tears and Gwaine tucked her back into his chest.
From across the room, Arthur moved his gaze from Gwaine and Luna up to Gwen who was still standing at the door. Gwen was leaning against the doorframe, eyes filled with tears, hand placed over her heart, and a fond smile on her lips. Arthur thought she looked absolutely beautiful, but now was not the time for that.
"Am I missing something?" The king asked, his question directed at the tearful maidservant at the door who seemed to know more of the situation than most.
To Arthur's surprise, it was not Gwen who responded but Gwaine.
"Actually," Gwaine started as he rose to his feet, guiding Luna up with him. Gwaine beamed down at Luna keeping his arm around her before addressing the knights. "I'd like to introduce you guys to my sister, Luna."
There was a beat of silence and then:
"Sister?!" Merlin exclaimed as he jumped to his feet.
"You never told us you had a sister!" Arthur accused as he rose from the chair he was situated in to address the one women who seemed to know what was going on. "Guinevere, did you know of this?"
"I had an inkling, my lord" Gwen shrugged. She met Luna's overwhelmed, emotional, and grateful gaze from across the room and sent her a grin. "But there will be more time for stories later won't there?"
Gwaine squeeze Luna tighter into his embrace.
"There absolutely will be" he replied with a smile.
