There were wires and machines everywhere when Gillian awoke. She looked around the room and spotted her mother laying down on a couch by the window, asleep. Gillian tried to talk, but realized she had tubes in her mouth, breathing for her. She wanted to wake her mother up and ask her what happened. Why her head hurt, why she was in the hospital, what day it was, thousands of questions resonating in her head. She looked over and saw a box of tissues and an idea popped into her head. Gillian grabbed the box off of the night stand and threw it at her mother. Ms. Knight awoke with a shock and looked over at her daughter, who was giving her an impatient look. Tears filled her eyes as she jumped up and called for a doctor.

"Doctor! She's awake!" she cried.

A tall man, in his mid 50's rushed into the room. He walked up to Gillian and took out his flashlight and shined it into her eyes, to make sure she had no brain damage and that her eyes still worked. Seh squinted as the bright light probed her eyes. He smiled at her reaction and turned the light off. He stood up and called in two nurses for further inspection. They asked Gillian if she could move both of her arms and legs. She did so. The doctor smiled and proceeded to tell her and her mother what was about to happen.

"Ok, Gillian, here's what's going to happen. We are going to remove the tube in your lungs so you can talk and breathe manually. " he said.

"It may hurt, and it will feel weird. When the tubes are out you're going to gasp for air as you take on the task of breathing yourself".

One nurse walked around to the monitor, and the other stood at Gillian's head, ready to remove the tube. The doctor gave the 'ok', and began removing the tube while the one nurse stood ready, just in case things went wrong. The doctor slowly slid the tube up and out of Gillian's mouth. Once it was fully out, Gillian gasped for air and began coughing. Once it stopped, she leaned back and took a deep breath before asking all of her questions.

"What happened? Why am I here? Why does my head hurt? Why is there a bandage around my head? Why did I need a breathing machine? What day is it? Why are there colors around everything?" she asked all at once.

The doctor smiled.

"Well first off, my name is Doctor Rubin. Now to answer your questions. You were shot by a drunken man that broke into your school. He shot you in the center of your head, which is why it's rapped in a bandage. You needed a breathing machine because you were in a coma, and you couldn't breathe on your own. The date is December 23rd. And what was the last question?"

Gillian looked up and thought for a moment.

"Why are there colors around everything?" she asked.

Doctor Rubin's face went from happy to confused. He didn't know what to say.

"I, uh, don't believe I follow you, dear. What do you mean?" he asked puzzled.

"There's lights, or color around everything. You, my mom, me, the chair you're in, this bed, everything." she stated.

"I still don't understand. Maybe it's a side effect from the medication. Anyways, I have a couple other patients to tend to. Please let me know if you need anything, or if there's anything else you'd like to know." he said before standing up and walking out, closing the door behind him.

"Hun, what was that about seeing colors?" Ms. Knight asked.

"I don't know. They're everywhere. Maybe I'm crazy." Gillian sighed.

Her mother looked at her for a long time. Her face carrying worry, shock, confusion, and a small hint of excitement all at once. She then gave a loud sigh.

"Hun, there's something I have to tell you." she said quietly.

She stood up and walked over to the bed, sitting on the bed next to Gillian. She then took a deep breath.

"Gill, you know the 'special school' your brother goes to?" she asked.

"Yes?" Gillian asked.

"Well, that school is special. But not the kind of special you may have in mind. It's a school for the elements."

Gillian's face dropped. A mix between shock, anger, confusion, and deceit filled her head.

"Is this some kind of joke? Are you trying to tell me that I'm a wizard and need to be sent off to Hogwarts?" she asked sarcastically.

"No, hun, this is not a joke. And I never said it involved wizards." her mother replied.

"The school is called 'The Merlin Academy'. It's located in Germany. That is where your brother goes to every year. He was shocked when he found out, too. He harnesses the water element, just like your father. I control the air element. And I think I know which one you control".

Gillian was shocked. She knew this couldn't be true, so she had to test it.

"Show me." she said

Her mother took a deep breath and looked around for something to demonstrate on. She spotted a pen on the night stand. She looked at it and placed her hand out, and the pen began to levitate.

"Wow.." Gillian whispered.

"So what's Cynthia's and mines power"?

"Well yours is apparently the element of the mind. As for Cynthia, we won't know what hers is until the summer before she goes to Merlin." Ms. Knight stated.

"What is the element of the mind? Why didn't I know this before? Deos Cynthia know about this? Why do I know so early? Is that normal"? Gillian's words went a thousand miles a second.

"The element of the mind is where you don't conjure up things like the normal elements. It's all mostly inside your head. You can read minds, see auras, which are those colors you see around people and things. If you train well enough when you're older, you can even learn how to manipulate things and people, teleport, and great energy orbs. All of that will come when you study at Merlin."

"What about my other questions?" Gillian said.

"I was getting to those. No one can know until their powers develop. And that usually happens when they are going into their first year of high school. But no one with powers goes anywhere other than a school made to educate those children. The reason is because young kids usually tell other kids everything, and they're too young to handle the abilities. So no, Cynthia doesn't know, and she won't until her powers start showing, which doesn't happen often during childhood. You have the rare element, which usually shows up after a tragic physical injury or out of nature. Not all injuries conjure up this power, but because you got struck in your third eye, which is where your power originates, it activated it. Most of the time though, the person with the power already had it, and the injury just woke it up early. It's not common for someone's fate element to be changed because of this. You can usually tell if the person was already born with the ability by the strength of their power. If it isn't easy to train, then it probably wasn't their born element."

Gillian just stared at her mother. She had nothing to say. All of this information that she wasn't even supposed to know yet, spilled out before her. And to make it even more difficult, she was something that she thought didn't exist, and she was the rare type.

Just then, someone ran through the door.
