Summer did nothing, just stood still and stared at the frozen creature, which was encased in a huge chunk of jagged ice. She saw that its mouth was drawn back in a cruel sneer, revealing two rows of insanely sharp teeth, and it's arms were raised, about to deliver the killing blow. Everything else was a blur.
It... was going to kill me, Summer realized, going cold all over. She looked down at her hands. What happened? She thought. Did I kill it? Despite the fact that it was about to slice her throat, strangle her, or kill her in some other equally gruesome way, she felt awful for killing any living creature, even when crushing a bug under her foot. It was for this reason that she kind of hoped it wasn't dead. Kind of.
"Greetings," said a voice behind her. Summer jumped, almost knocking over the frozen creature, and she whirled towards the door. She screamed before she could stop herself and put her hands to her mouth.
The source of the voice flinched. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." They walked into the classroom. The person was wearing a short sleeved shirt with slanted red and white stripes on it, black leggings, and with what seemed like gauze wrapped around their arms. They also donned black fingerless gloves. A long white scarf was wrapped around their neck, and a piece of cloth was pulled up to obscure their mouth. Their short black hair was put up into a ponytail with only a few strands falling out (and with the side shaved, Summer noticed). Their face was somewhat visible, but not enough so that she knew she probably wouldn't be able to recognize them without. They also had light brown skin, and- most shocking of all- red eyes. Bright red. They stared, their eyes seeming to pierce her soul as she stood there and stared back.
They look like Sam, Summer realized. It made her relax substantially. So, when they opened their mouth, she was the first to speak.
"Who- who-" Summer started shaking, cutting off her reply. She leaned against a desk to regain her composure. "Who are you? What happened here? What did I do?"
"Okay, okay, calm down. Everything is fine, trust me." The person pointed at the creature. "I'm Ace. That thing is called a Shadowling." They sighed in exasperation. "It's not dead. But I can't kill it in this state, and we don't want to wait for it to melt, so we should probably leave soon."
"So-" Summer breathed in. "So she was my teacher?" "No." Ace shook their head. "'She' is currently at her house. She took a sick day because she got the flu. That Shadowling used Impersonation to assume her identity and try to kill you."
"Oh, okay." Summer shook her head, not fully understanding. "So... what did I do?"
Ace narrowed their eyes. "Here's the simplified version- magic exists. You are a Magi, a creature with the ability to do magic." They glanced at the ice sculpture, which Summer thought maybe had begun to form cracks. "And, clearly, you're an Ice Magi."
