Q and I walked into Zingy Wings. Almost immediately I heard a voice. "Holy crap, dude!" It was the guy behind the counter. He was staring at Q. " You're Q from Impractical Jokers! Awesome! Did you call ahead for an order?"
"Yeah, uh, Party Platter number five, with ranch and blue cheese." Q replied.
"Sweet. I knew that voice sounded familiar!" the guy at the counter said. "This is too cool. Do you think i could get an autograph, please?"
"Of course." Q said.
"Man, my roomate is gonna be so jealous. He called out 'sick' tonight..boy is he gonna be pissed when he finds out that you're here." Q scribbled a signature on a menu. "I tell ya what." He grabbed a napkin and scrawled his signature on that as well. " You take this menu, and give him the napkin. And tell him he could have had the better one had he come to work like he was supposed to." The worker grinned. "Thank you so much man!" "No problem. What do I owe ya for the food?" "One sec." The guy said. He swiped a card through the register. The screen flashed "30% code accepted." "That comes to...forty-six dollars and seventeen cents. " "That's awesome bro. You didn't have to do that." Q pulled out his card, allowed the guy to swipe it, and signed the slip. "Thanks man. Have a good one." "Wait, you forgot your birthday treat, the chocolate mousse surprise. Is it your birthday?" Q shook his head. "Nah, it's hers." The guy behind the counter smiled at me. "Well, happy birthday, sweetheart. Having a good time?" I grinned. "More so than you could imagine. Thanks!" He nodded at us, then walked over to the cold case where the drinks and desserts were held. He pulled out a huge chocolate cake, decorated with multi-colored sprinkles and dark chocolate curls . "From all of us here at Zingys, a very very happy birthday...have a Zingy night!"
I stammered, "Are..are you serious? I thought the freebie was just a slice! Not that I'm complaining..." He laughed. "That;s where the 'surprise' part of the name comes in. Have a great night, guys!" "You too," Q and I called as we walked away.
We headed back out to the car. I could smell the wings. They were making me really, really hungry. Q opened my car door for me, then slid the box onto my lap. "Careful now, it's hot. Actually, hang on a sec. " He grabbed the box again and balanced it on the hood of the car. He then opened the back door and grabbed a hoodie from the floor. He spread it on my lap. "There. Hopefully that's a little better." He passed me the hot box once more, then carefully place the cake box on top. He shut the door and got in, and we headed back to his place.
"God, these wings smell delicious!" Q said. I laughed. "I was just thinking the same. I can't wait to try them. I've never had Zingy's before."
"You haven't? They're the best in town." Q was silent for a moment, then added. "Also, I'm pretty sure that guy gave us more than he was supposed to."
"You mean the discount? I noticed that too."
Q shook his head. "Yes and no. I mean, I noticed that, but as far as your birthday dessert..I'd put money on the fact that you really were only supposed to get a single slice of that cake for dessert."
"If that's the case, he probably just gave it to me since I was with you. You saw his reaction. He was so excited." Q nodded. "Yeah. I mean, I'm always happy to meet fans. That's usually how a male interaction goes down. Guys just get don't all flustered around us." He shrugged. "I guess it's because they're not trying to get in our pants."
"Oh, like all your legions of female fans?" I teased.
He burst out laughing. "Exactly. You're gonna tell me you'd turn this down if it were offered to you?" He snickered. "Oh man, I can't even believe I just said that."
I laughed too. " I didn't say that " I poked him in the arm. "And that's a pretty healthy sense of confidence you've got there."
He laughed. "I know, I know. I'm too cocky for my own good."
"Just as long as you don't use that bravado attitude on other girls." I told him. "I'm gonna be greedy and insist on having you all to myself. "
"I think I can handle that." Q told me. We arrived back at his place. He got out of the car and once again opened my door, this time grabbing the food boxes from my lap. Murr and Emily had disappeared from the front lawn. We headed inside.
The first thing we saw was Joe and Sal having what appeared to be some sort of contest. They were both using pretzel sticks to make buildings. Q shook his head. "Hi there, children. What did you do with the rest of our friends?" Sal glanced up from his pretzel tower. I noticed he had pink lipstick smeared on his face. "Barbara went to the bathroom. Murr and Emily are...somewhere. Huh. you know, I'm not really sure where they are, to tell the truth."
Q shook his head. "Well, they'll come if they want food, I suppose. " He set the boxes down on the table and flipped the lid open. That same delicious smell permeated my nostrils again, even stronger this time around. Q passed me a paper plate. "Birthday girl gets first dibs, of course." I smiled and started to fill my plate. There were bone in and boneless wings. "Those are mild, these are original spicy buffalo" Q said, pointing out the differences. "And those are...hm, you know, I'm not sure what those are." I picked up the mystery item and gave it a once-over. It was a boneless wing, that much I could tell. The sauce covering it was a light yellowish-brown that reminded me of dijon mustard. I took a bite. Sure enough, a tangy mustard taste filled my mouth. "Mm,that's really good. Maybe they gave us some free samples? Or maybe this was accidentally mixed in from another order? Either way, it's delicious. Try it?" I offered the other half to Q. He popped it in his mouth. "Damn, you're right. Not bad. Too bad this look so obviously mustard-y, otherwise I'd suggest getting Murray to try one. Could be fun." I laughed. "You're terrible." I put some hot wings on my plate, then grabbed a couple stalks of celery and a container of blue cheese. Q grabbed a plate and did the same, then called out "Everyone better get over here while there's still food to be had!" He wrapped his free arm around me and we headed to the couch. Soon Joe, Sal and Barbara had joined us. Emily and Murr, however, were nowhere to be seen. Sal shrugged, and with a mouthful of celery mumbled "They'll turn up. And if they don't, they won't get fed. " Q and I exchanged a glance. "Is this normal for Murr to just disappear?" Barbara asked Sal. He nodded. "Yeah, he actually does this a fair bit. Like I said, it's not anything to worry about." Joe chimed in "If you're really concerned, we can call his cell phone." Q nodded. "I mean, it's not that I'm worried..more nosy than anything." Sal nodded, barely glancing up from his wings. "Do that then."
Q dialed his phone. A second later, we heard a faint buzzing. "The call is coming from inside the house," Joe said. Q and I shrugged. "I have a feeling I know where they are.."Q muttered to me. "Wanna go find out?"
