Waking up, I'm disoriented. My head aches and I realize that my hands are bound behind me. It doesn't take me long to start freaking out. I turn my head and see that I'm in a cave, lit by a torch on one of the walls and I'm against a wall. My breathing turns heavy and I struggle to get free from my bonds. Suddenly, I'm gasping. Where am I? Am I going to be tortured? I can't take it anymore. I know it isn't smart, but I start yelling.
"Hey! Where am I? Untie me! Get me out of here! I swear to-" A hand flies over my mouth and I debate biting it. I continue to struggle with the person, but I hear a little voice whisper,
"Quiet."
I obey, knowing they must be on my side if they're trying to make sure I don't alert anyone else. Noises emit from where I assume the entrance to the cave is, voices and such, and I lay back, letting the small hand cover my mouth, not struggling anymore.
Once the sounds have dissipated, I sigh, then tense up as I realize I'm still not safe. The hand is removed and I turn my head as quickly as possible, needing to see my rescuer and, possibly, my captor. My fear turns to shock as I face a young girl, looking as if she's only 12, maybe older.
Her eyes are dark brown, skin dark, a couple tattoos on her arm. She has thick eyebrows a slightly darker shade than her long, wavy hair, her eyelashes are thick and black, and she has a few freckles smattered across her nose and cheeks. She's pretty for a little girl, but she's fierce, I can definitely tell that from her attitude.
"Who are you?" I whisper.
"Shh!" She hisses, and I realize she may not even speak English. If there are really people on earth, they might have their own language. I quiet down and simply stay still, glancing from her to the voices above that have resumed their talking. I think it's talking. Truly, I'm not certain it's English, or any language I've ever heard before.
For a very long few minutes, they continue, speaking loudly and with some urgency. I wonder if it's about me, the ship landing. Could I be in serious danger?
Probably.
We wait for what seems like hours after the talking stops. It's only then do I realize I've been holding my breath and I start to breathe and worry again. I stare once more at the girl. She's listening, I can tell, but she sighs and looks at me a second after I start to study her.
"Who are you?" She asks, speaking perfect English. I'm not sure if I'm more shocked or glad that we can communicate, but I'm relieved all the same.
"I..." I trail off, glancing at my tied up hands and knowing I need to get free before I will tell her anything.
Looking back to her, I watch her chocolate eyes as they stare at me with some emotion I can't grasp. Is it fear? Worry? Wonder? Anger? I landed in their land, their world. It's not a far fetched idea to believe that they hate me and want me dead. What if I was a killer, sent here to destroy these people?
This girl might be thinking that.
"Speak." She commands, but her voice quivers. It's only that moment that I realize she must be frightened. I look nothing like her, possibly the rest of her people, and I came from the sky. She might not even know humans are capable of flying to space.
"My name is Calloway... Ember." It's a struggle to say my last name, always has been. If she was from the Ark, she'd know why.
"How did you get here? How... how did you fall from the sky?" The girl continues, pressing me for information. It's not as if I can avoid her questions, I'm the person who's tied up in a freaking cave. But I wonder if I can get information from her, somehow. I can see she's nervous, that much is true, so if she thinks I'm a threat, I might be able to milk it for my own purposes.
