Chapter 9

Friday June 29th

Em’s POV

“Soph I don’t feel like going.” I whispered as she skittered around my room. I was sitting on the sofa looking at my hands. “Sophie please.” My voice croaked and I shook my head. “I can’t do this.”

“Yes you can and you will, ROA is a huge part of any teenage girl’s life and you’re going.” I looked up to see her smile as she brought over my makeup box. “Now shut up and let me make you look spectacular.” I sighed and closed my eyes as she put on eye shadow.

“Okay you can look.” She said stepping away an hour later. She’d decided she was doing everything; hair, makeup, I’d already chosen the dress and shoes and accessories but now I was in a cast she had chosen my new pair of shoes. “Get up, come on.” I did as I was told and with a sigh pulled myself up, it took a lot of effort to carry the dead weight of my walking cast with me.

I hobbled over to the full length mirror with my eyes closed and Sophie guiding me as to make it a surprise to myself. I opened my eyes and gasped slightly at what I looked like. I raised a hand to my mouth and just stared. I was in my dress, my lovely dress I’d bought a year ago, it still looked amazing now. It was an aqua blue with a hint of purple and there was a slate grey flower pattern up the side of the bodice. My hair was pulled up into a messy bun with little tufts sticking out from where my hair was too short to fit in. Sophie had made my face a work of art; my eyes had a double flick like I remember Pixie Lott doing at some award ceremony a few years back. I looked down at my legs. I was still in a cast, but I only had two or three weeks left and a week ago I was put into a walking cast. Soph had put me in black lacy tights, cutting one leg to just a little longer than where my cast started and had stuffed the overly long bit into the cast. My other foot was in an aqua converse shoe that matched my dress perfectly.

“I think you’ll need these too.” She held out two boxes, one was long and thin and the other was square and transparent, inside was a corsage on a wrist band. “Craig told me they were going for the American PROM thing. And someone sent this to you.” She nodded at the flower. I smiled at it tentatively and reached out for it. “No you need this first.” She handed me the long white box and I grinned as I opened it up to find a pair of black lace gloves that matched my tights. I slid them on and smiled, they ended just a little further than my wrist. I then held out my hand for the box and opened it and put the corsage over my right glove.

“Who sent it?” I said looking up at her.

“Who do you think?” she said smiling sadly. I looked down at it and chewed my lip. Jase had sent it; I’d have to tell him thanks. “Right, it’s time to go.” Soph grabbed her clutch and went for the door. She was coming too and her date was Craig, they’d been spending a lot of time together and I think he had got over me for a more mature me.

I sat clicking my tongue against the roof of my mouth two hours later; Soph was with Craig slow dancing. I think Sophie had met her Prince Charming now, which I was really happy about but I wish Craig hadn’t wasted the extra money and Soph just took my ticket instead. Ginny was with Davey too and I was here on my own.

My phone buzzed and I yelped at it and then looked down embarrassed, another buzzed immediately after that. I unlocked my phone and went to my message board. There were two off Jase. I looked up and around the room for him and saw him across the hall with his mates; I caught his eye and raised his eyebrow at me. I looked back down and clicked his name.

U lwk beautiful 2nite, wish I cud dans wiv u X

Awww did I scare u cupcake? X

I laughed and looked up at him to see he was gone, I looked up and around for him and then spotted him walking out into the foyer of the posh hotel. As he went he turned and caught my eye. I looked back down at my phone.
