Zuko and Katara: What Happened After

Chapter 3; The Little Things

As the weeks lingered, so did the feelings of Katara and Zuko.

Katara's POV:
It's been hard to watch Zuko and Mai, and it was getting even harder acting like everything was fine with Aang. He was my best friend, and I couldn't bare to hurt him. My feelings for him weren't as strong as his were. It pained me to even think about someone else while being with him, but I knew it was wrong. I decided that it was time to do the right thing, and end it.

Aang was meditating. He looked so peaceful and somber. It took me a few moments to gather myself before I could say anything.

"Aang?" I called
"Yeah!" he cheered while having the most cheerful smile
"I need to talk to you about something"
"Anything, you can tell me anything"
My heart raced as the words flowed out of my mouth...
"I think it's better if we stay friends"
He looked down ... "What? I thought you were happy"
"I am, but I've been unfair to you. I think I have feelings for someone else" I whispered
"On the night of the play, you told me you weren't ready. Then when we returned to Ba Sing Se you kissed me... I thought that was it for us, that was us realizing that we belong together" he said angrily
"I thought so too, but I didn't expect this to happen, Aang please understand"
He shook his head "Understand what? That you don't love me, that all of this was a lie?
"It wasn't a lie! I have feelings for you, but I can't continue our relationship knowing that I'm betraying you" I cried
"Who is it? Zuko?" he said
I took a breath before I told him. "yes..."
"I think I need to go back to meditating he said" with tears in his eyes.

He sat back down and looked away from me. I felt terrible, but I did the right thing. I didn't want this to end our friendship, but I knew things would be different.

As I walked away, I saw Zuko at the door. He heard everything.
