As we walk deeper, and deeper into the tunnel that is leading us to the inside of the base I take Emma's hand, starting to feel nervous. She doesn't pull away, just walks silently beside me and we continue to walk in the darkness. I hate the dark, it reminds me too much of my own power, and how dangerous it is. It's hard to breathe, and the air is cold. Finally, I can't take on it, and I start to tug on Emma.
"Can't you light a fire in your hand or something?" I ask, getting annoyed with the pure darkness of our surroundings.
"I'm trying to save my powers, and besides if I light a fire it could draw the moisture out of the air, and it would be even harder to breathe," I sag my head, and Emma squeezes my hand, forcing me to smile a little. Anyone who didn't know us would probably think we were dating, but we just so happened to be that annoying best friend couple that acts like they are. I have no problem with it, it keeps me from needing a boy in my life. Having someone to relate to is nice, and yes I love Emma, she is my best friend, you are supposed to love your best friend. The thing I love most is that we always make up. Technically we have never had a real fight, just silly arguments, and that is why even though it all we are still the happy best friend coupe we always were.
"Stop complaining Ella, at least you aren't moving the Earth around while you can barely breathe," Jane grumps, and I don't blame her. It's hard enough to be down here just walking, she has to put so much energy towards using her powers, and even thinking about that alone impresses me. Jane is strong, I know that, but even this is some rough conditions. As a walk, I start to notice that I am letting less cold. Then there is a slight glow coming from beside me, and I start to laugh.
"Ella, what the hell is so funny?" Jane asks, looking back at me. I let go of Emma's hand when she starts to snicker as well.
"Emma-" I can barely get the words out. "Your hair is beginning to catch on fire!" I get out, and Kate starts laughing too, seeing the tips of Emma's hair begin to flicker like coals of a dying fire. I think we are all in such a state of hysteria from the lack of air that we can't help but laugh at this one subtle thing that makes us all giggle. Emma starts to frantically blow her hair out, which just makes us laugh even harder, and it seems like she is truly panicking, so I decide to step in.
"Emma are you cold?" I manage to get out?
"What in the world would that matter at this moment?" She asks me, still trying to pat out her hair.
"I think your gemstone is too, and it is trying to warm you up," I laugh, but then I feel a pang in my chest that makes me stop laughing. The pain is coming from my gemstone, and I clutch it, trying to figure out what it is coming from. I'm laughing, it's not like I'm in the middle of a battle so my gemstone shouldn't be trying to make me go dark, so what could it be? Soon everyone stops laughing, and In the glow of our gemstones, and Emma's hair I can just make out their faces. They look confused like they have no idea what's going on. I give out a small groan as I fall to my knees trying to stop the pain in any way I can.
"Ella? What's wrong? Is it your gem? Is it hurting you?" Emma asks me, bending over with me, and trying to get me to look at her, but I can't I roll over onto my back trying not to scream. I bite my lip, knowing it wouldn't make anything better, and just worry the girls more. As the girls start smothering me with questions of what's happening I am just beginning to make something out. A voice it seems. Is it speaking to me? I can't tell. It's not loud enough yet.
"Shhh," I tell the girls, and they stop talking immediately, looking around the room as I let my glassy eyes find a space in the darkness, and listen for the whisper. I can't quite make it out, but it is so close I can almost touch it. After seconds of clutching, and listening to I am finally able to make one thing out. My name, just my name, but that name sends chills up my spine, and it is not because of the name, but the voice who whispered it.
"Frost?" I whisper back, and my eyes snap away from the black spot, and I am back sitting with my friends, taking in the damp air around me.

"Okay Ella, you have to stop doing that, honestly you really gotta get it together," Emma says looking upset, but relieved at the same time.
"It's not like I'm meaning to," I respond, shaking my head.
"Something's up with you though. The rest of us have had nothing wrong with our gemstones since we got them implanted, only you," Kate points out.
"It's weird though. Normally I fall, into the darkness I mean, but this time, this time it was different somehow," I shudder.
"What do you mean it was different?" Kate asks.
"I mean, it was just pain, but then I heard something, a voice, but I don't..." I have to take a moment to think.
"You don't what?" Emma asks, moving closer to me.
"I don't understand why he is always in my head. He is always there, and with him whispering stuff in my ear, warning me about things, I just don't understand," I shake my head again trying to get a better grasp on it.
"What are you talking about? Who's he?" Jane asks, and the tension in the room seems to have grown immensely within a span of 2.5 seconds.
"Frost," I say, shuddering again at the name. It's weird to say it out loud.
"Woah what?"Jane chokes, not bothering to hide any judgement.
"Was he not the one that kidnapped us a few months ago?" Kate questions.
"You don't like him, do you? Emma stutterers and all the girls look at each other completely taken aback.
"What? No way!" I emphasize, before continuing. "It's something weird though, it's like we are connected somehow," I admitted, and not only to the girls but to myself.
"That may explain some things," Emma murmured, and I look up at her.
"What things?" I question here, and she just looks at me with the same blank expression she always wears when she doesn't want to tell me something.
"You know how your eyes are different colours? One's kind of blue, and the other is grey, and brown?
"Yeah they have been like that for as long as I can remember, but what about them?"
"Well, every time Frost enters the room, they flash a bright blue," she mutters.
"And why may I ask, has this not come up until now?" I am starting to get frustrated, not really with Emma, but with everything being so complicated.
"Well I thought I was seeing things, and you never brought up that you had a connection, so I thought it didn't matter," she stampers, most likely thinking I am going to get upset with her.
"Emma, it's alright, I understand. It's just with everything going on I thought it would be weird to bring it up," I admit, trying my best to make sure she knows that I am not upset.
"Yeah, same here I guess, but the question now is, why is the connection even there?" She asks, and this is the question that truly stumps me because if I am being truly honest with myself, I have no idea why this connection is here, to begin with.
