prologue,

Most would argue that Hannah Jade was nothing special, and they were right - to an extent, at the very least. She was born without a quirk, would live without a quirk, and she would die without a quirk. But, as so few would know, quirks weren't the only things able to make one 'special'.

All her life, she loved the water, the way it looked, the curls of the waves and how the colours of it could change from green, to grey, and to all shades of blue humanly possible, especially the bright teal waters of the tropics, along the reefs, and the creatures that called it home. The sound of the sea would sing songs, as though they had been written for her. Something powerful, something ancient and deep and young and new.

Technically, Hannah never developed a quirk. There was no box ticked on that part of her medical records, nor a name in the database of any government registries, but she did have a strange and special power.

It had happened suddenly, one night. On a full moon, as all magical or strange events did, when she was nine. The brunette girl's father had taken her camping on the gorgeous, though locally infamous island off the coast. It was eerie, known for some strange happenings and even a few alleged disappearances. Despite the island being fully explored and documented, its all together eerie nature had left the place uninhabited, though quickly bought up as a nature reserve and sacred site of the local Aboriginal tribe.

The crickets had chirped loudly, louder than usual when the hazel eyed girl had woken up, in  need to go to the bathroom. The young Hannah wandered away from the tent, torch clutched in her palm tightly. They had set up the camp far from the shore, as well as any other water way, in hope of avoiding the mosquitos. Still, they buzzed around and bit into her flesh. In the darkness of the islands' mighty trees, she had stumbled, leg catching on rough stone and skin tearing in places from her ankle and knee cap.

Hannah let out a low groan. Though as she tried to push herself back to her feet, despite the sharp sting, her attention was caught by a brilliant blue glimmering. Come here, it seemed to beckon, come here., Through the gap in the stone, she crawled down the tunnel. It was steep and narrow and stoney, yet at the base, there was a pool. The water bubbled blue and silver and bright, despite the overwhelming darkness.
