❛ In my head

I play a supercut of us

All the magic we gave off

All the love we had and lost

And in my head

The visions never stop

These ribbons wrap me up

But when I reach for you

There's just a supercut ❜

— Lorde, Supercut

The water was chilling on her skin, cool and refreshing and humming with something familiar and almost homely. The ocean enveloped her body, seeping into her skin and across every pore and scale. Hannah's hair floated lazily behind her, the tail end of her braids waving too and fro.

The sun shone from the west, beaming its warm afternoon glow down onto the realm below. There were somedays when Hannah found herself wondering what would happen if she just kept chasing it, swimming after the light and warmth and travelling across the seven seas and exploring the depths and the treasures of each ocean. That afternoon was one of those days.

Yep, I definitely needed this. Hannah repeated to herself for what was probably between the fourth and seventh time. The first swim in the sea in almost a month, a few days out from the full moon too.  A swim to cool off after a frankly catastrophic day. The stampede at lunch was a near horrifying experience.

The orange-golden tail shimmered in the dim, distorted lights of the waves.  Though the crystaline blue ocean waters slowly began to shift into the slightly greenier, slightly muddier brackish waters. Out of the corner of her eye, the brunette spotted the face of a crocodile in the distance. Hannah made an effort to keep her swimming steady.

It was alright, it was alright. She was fine. She was fine. The teenager resisted the rushes of adrenaline flooding her system, instead she ran her fingers through the motion of the tide. She'd swam near crocs before. They were more, erm, aggressive than other sea life. More curious too, the last one she'd encountered had swam right up to her and swam along side her for almost a few kilometres. The one before that had tried to take a bite out of her, luckily it had been unsuccessful.

The girl glanced to the east, though hazel eyes darted through the water, on all sides, above and below and behind, nothing, even when her soul asked the ocean and the vibrations of the water, it came back with naught but the presence of the one a few metres away.

Its tail pushed it lazily closer, whilst Hannah's own took her further away. It was four metres or so, she cringed at the sharp, long teeth protruding from its long, narrow snout. She banked hard left and twisted, with a few swishes of her own golden scales she was swimming fast, the magical little tingle creeped up her bones, her scales and skin began to itch with a fury, and with one harsh slap of her tail the mermaid was powering through the water at the blink of an eye.
