Chapter 9 "Grew Legs And Walked Out"

A few more SWAT members come into the ED.
Connor walks into Trauma 4 to take care of one of the SWAT members.
"Let's get his vest off!" Connor tells them.
They get his vest off and like the other member it has gone through the vest.
Connor gets this member taken care of but unlike the other guy, this guy is conscious.
"Can you tell me anything about Shaylynn? Is she alright" Connor asks the guy.
"I don't know any information on her," the guy says as he's rolled out of the room.
Connor can't believe he can't find out anything about her.
Walking out of the room he looks over to the doors and sees Shaylynn walk in helping another SWAT member walk.
Connor feels his heart start back up and now he can finally breathe.
Rushing over, he puts the guy's other arm around his neck, "Why isn't he on a gurney?" Connor asks her.
"Ambulances have been prioritized for only the critical," Shaylynn tells him, "Since he's shot in the leg, he's not critical. So we brought him here in the SWAT truck."
They help the guy over to Trauma 2 where Ethan is waiting on them.
"I've got this," Ethan tells Connor seeing he finally has color back in his face seeing Shaylynn's alright.
Connor nods and walks out of the room with Shaylynn.
She's getting ready to walk out the doors when Connor grabs her hand and pulls her into the doctor's lounge.
When he finally has her in there he hugs her, "Are you alright?" she asks backing up from him swearing she heard a whimper in her ear.
Connor looks at her, she sees where his cheeks are wet, "I thought you were hurt! Or worse yet, I lost you!" he tells her.
"Connor I'm fine," she tells him, "This is my job. If you're going to have a problem with me doing this, then maybe we should part ways."
He looks at her dumbfounded at what she just said, "No!" he tells her, "I don't want to part ways! Shaylynn, I love you and can't imagine my life without you!"
"I love you too, Connor but I have to get back out there and help," she tells him quickly giving him a kiss.
She walks around him and starts heading to the door before he grabs her arm, "What about the shooter?" he asks her.
"I got him," she tells him.
Connor smiles a little and nods at her.
Shaylynn smiles at him then walks out of the doctor's lounge.
Connor walks out and watches her walk out of the ED. He sees that the ED is finally starting to settle down.
Getting done with his patient, Will sees Connor and walks over to him. He sees out the door what Connor is watching.
"Happy to see Shaylynn's alright and you finally don't look like a ghost any longer," Will tells him.
Connor looks at him, "Thanks!" he says.
"You know she obviously can take care of herself or she wouldn't be a part of SWAT," Will says.
"I know that but that doesn't mean I won't ever worry about her!" Connor tells him, "Will, I love her!"
Will smiles, "I know you do! Everyone can see it on your face when she's around."
"Plus she looks damn hot in that SWAT uniform," Connor says smiling.
Will starts laughing.
Maggie walks up to Connor and Will, "Did you hear about Dr. Bekker?" she asks them.
They both look at her, "No," Will tells her.
"One of the victims has HIV and she cut her finger on the scalpel," Maggie tells him.
Both Connor and Will get shocked looks on their faces, "Did anyone see how she did it?" Connor asks.
"No," Maggie says, " By the time anyone got out of the surgical room, Dr. Bekker had it all wrapped up and won't let anyone look at it."
Connor looks at Will, "I'm heading up!" he says and hurries to the elevators.

Getting off the elevator, Connor sees Ava talking to Ms. Goodwin in the hallway.
He walks up to them, "What happened, Ava?"
"I cut myself!" she tells Connor in a huffy tone.
"I'm going to have to sideline you," Ms. Goodwin tells her.
"Are you serious?" Ava says.
"You have to start taking the medication and get tested," Ms. Goodwin tells her, "It's hospital protocol.
Ava looks at Connor with sad eyes. She starts walking away headed toward the doctor's lounge on that floor.
"How long is she going to be sidelined?" Connor asks Ms. Goodwin.
"As long as it takes," Ms. Goodwin says.
She walks away and heads toward the elevators.
Connor starts walking to the doctor's lounge.
He walks in and sees Ava sitting down facing away from him, "Ava," he says.
Ava turns around and looks at Connor with tears running down her cheeks, "What am I going to do, Connor?" she asks.
He sits down beside her and puts his arm around her shoulders, "I'm here. I'll be here for you," he tells her, "But right now I have to get back downstairs."
Connor stands up, "Will you at least let me look at your cut?" he asks.
"No, I have it tightly wrapped," she tells him.
"Alright, I'll check on you in a little bit," he says and walks out of the doctor's lounge.
Ava gets a big smile on her face.

Getting off the elevator back down in the ED, Will sees Connor and walks over to him.
"So, how is Ava?" he asks Connor.
"She seems in good spirits for cutting herself on a scalpel that was used on an HIV positive patient," Connor tells him.
Maggie walks up to them, "Dr. Halstead, here are your patient's results," she tells him handing over the tablet.
"Thanks," Will says taking the tablet from her,
"Dr. Rhodes, I have a patient for you in Treatment 3," Maggie tells him.
"Alright," he says walking in that direction.
He walks up and moves the curtain to see Shaylynn standing beside the bed with a SWAT member sitting on it.
Connor smiles at her as he gets some hand sanitizer, "I'm Dr. Rhodes. What seems to be going on?" he asks.
"Shaylynn here thought I should come in and see you," the man tells Connor.
"This is the SWAT Commander, my boss, Brian Luce. He was complaining of chest pain and his left arm feeling numb," she tells Connor.
"Well, let's see what's going on," Connor tells Brian.
As Connor exams Brian, Brian keeps looking at Connor then looks over at Shaylynn, "Is this who you can't shut up about?" Brian asks her.
Shaylynn gets a shocked look on her face as Connor looks up at her, "Yes, Brian! Dr. Rhodes is the one I can't shut up about!"
Brian starts laughing.
Connor smiles at her, "I'm going to have a few tests ran to get a better idea what's going on," he tells Brian.
Brian nods at him.
Connor looks at Shaylynn and nods toward out of the treatment room, "I'll be right back," she tells Brian."
Brian looks at Connor then at Shaylynn, "Take your time," he tells her.
Connor walks out with Shaylynn following him. He tells Maggie what tests he wants ran on Brian.
Connor walks away from Maggie, stops and turns around to look at Shaylynn, "I'd like to get together later tonight," Connor tells her.
Shaylynn smiles at him, "Really?" she asks all excited.
Connor smiles, "Yes."
"Okay, what do you plan on doing so I know how to dress?" she asks.
"Dress warm," he tells her.
Shaylynn gives him a confused look, "Alright," she looks over to see Brian's being moved, "I'm going to go with him," she tells Connor.
He nods, "I'll call you to let you know the details," Connor tells her.
Shaylynn smiles and kisses him. She walks around him and walks over to the elevator.

An hour later, Shaylynn's returning from the cafeteria to the floor Brian's having his tests on.
She gets off the elevator and starts walking toward the waiting area.
As she makes her way, she looks down a hallway to see Connor talking to Ava.
Ava flips her hair, laughs, and touches his face.
Shaylynn can't believe what she's seeing. She stands there in disbelief as Brian walks up to her, "I'm done," he tells her.
Shaylynn shakes her head letting him know she heard him as she continues to stare down the hallway.
Connor looks and sees Shaylynn staring at him with a look of sadness on her face.
He sees her turn around and walks out of sight.
"SHAYLYNN!" he yells as he runs down the hallway, Ava gets a huge smile on her face.
When he finally makes it to the elevator, she's gone.
"Damn it!" he says hitting the elevator door.
One of the nurses from the surgery where Ava cut herself walks up to the elevator ready to go home.
"Is everything alright?" she asks Connor.
He doesn't answer her as the elevator door opens and the nurse steps in.
"It's funny how out of the hundred of surgeries Dr. Bekker has performed that she happens to cut herself during one where the patient has HIV," the nurse says.
Connor just stares at her, "There was also a scalpel missing when we counted the instruments," the nurse says as the door starts to close before Connor stops it.
"What do you mean a scalpel is missing?" Connor questions her.
"Everyone looked everywhere for it. It's nowhere in the surgical room. The patient was even x-rayed to make sure it wasn't inside him. It's like it grew legs and walked out on its own," she tells him.
Connor moves his hand so the elevator door can close, "Thanks for letting me know," he tells the nurse as the door closes.
He turns around with a pissed off look on his face.
