I RESTED on Will's bed while him, Mike, Joyce, and Bob—who arrived shortly after I fell asleep—examined the drawings that Will had created.

While I slept, I had a dream. The dream felt so real and it was like...like I was there. I was in a room with two other girls. One being Jane and the other girl seemed very familiar. I'm pretty sure I knew here at some point, but I didn't remember because in the lab, we were kept away from the other subjects and only saw each other everyone once in a while. The girl have beautiful brown skin and dark hair.

We were young and we were playing with toys that were given to us. The three of us wore white shirts and blue dresses.

I heard the door open, revealing a woman who I didn't really know at the time. But now I know that it was my mother who fought to get Jane and I back from the government.

"Lily, Jane," she cooed. She reached her arms out for us. Although I didn't know who she was, I willingly reached my hand out, but she was pulled back by the bad men and taken away. I could her her desperate cries in the distance as they got farther and farther, softer and softer.

Then I saw Dr. Brenner. The man that my mother wanted dead. "Come on, Nine," he said, reaching out his hand for mine. I grabbed it and followed him out of the rainbow room. I looked back to see Jane and the other girl looking right back at me before the door was shut.

I could still her my mother yelling and shouted for us. "Lily, Jane! Lily! LILY!"

"Lily!" I woke up to see Mike and Will standing by the bed. I was kind of upset that he interrupted my nap, but happy since I didn't have to see that horrible dream.

"We have to go. We know where Hopper is and we need to go find him," he said, helping me up.

I didn't reply because I just didn't have the strength to. I just felt exhausted and weak. I slipped on my checkered vans and put on my brown sweater.

We went outside where Joyce and Bob were waiting in the car. I sat in the back seat between Mike and Will. Still being half asleep, I rested my head on Mike's shoulder. I felt him tense up a bit when I did this, but his muscles relaxed after a bit.

As I started to doze off, I started to think about last week when Miss Easten and I first arrived in Hawkins and I thought that I was gonna have a somewhat-normal life. Then I thought, Miss Easten.

She was probably worried sick about me. I hadn't told her where I was going yesterday, but I felt that if I were to tell her, she'd want to meet Mrs. Byers and then she'd get caught up in this mess.

I knew I didn't think of Miss Easten as a mother, I did care about her and wanted to keep her safe. She doesn't deserve to be dragged into this situation and into our messed up lives.

———

"There's nothing. There's nothing here," I heard Mike's voice say.

My eyes fluttered open. It was dark out and we were still in the car.

"A-are we close?"

"We're in the vicinity," Bob said, looking over the map.

"What's that mean, the vicinity?"

"It means we're close. I mean, I don't know. It's not precise."

"But we did all that work!"

I noticed Will's eyes closing while he sat up straight. All of a sudden, his eyes went wide.

"Turn right"

"What?"

"I saw him."

"Where?" Joyce looked around the field that was by the road.

"Not here, in my now-memories."

"Your what?" Bob asked in confusion.

"Turn right!"

Joyce jerked the steering wheel right. We screamed as we ran into bails of hay, pumpkins, and a wooden sign.

The car came to an abrupt stop as Hopper's car came into view. I was breathing heavily, along with everyone else.

"Are you okay?"

Out of breath, Mike managed to say, "Superspy."

"What's Jim doin' here? Joyce?"

"Guys," Joyce said, "I need you to stay here."

"No. Mom, mom, mom, it's not safe."

"That's why I need you to stay here! Stay here!"

Her and Jim got out of the car and started shouting for Hopper. I leaned my head on the back of the seat and sighed.

At this point, I just wanted to go home and wished we stayed in Chicago where I had a normal life. I wanted to go home and sleep in my warm bed. I wanted to go home and eat Miss Easten's warm, home-cooked meals. I wanted to go home to Miss Easten.

"You okay, Lily?" Mike asked.

"I guess. Wh-"

"What did you see?"

I knew what he was talking about, but I hesitated to speak. "I was trying to look for Jane bu-"

"Jane?"

"El. I was looking for El. But I saw my mother instead."

"You saw Miss Easten?"

"No. My real mother. She was saying something over and over again. 'Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right, four to the left. 450."

"What does that mean?"

"Too much to explain. But I saw what was behind those words and it all connected to the lab. It showed her trying to take El and I back from the lab. The only reason why we were still there was because the whole experience ruined her. It like...poisoned her mind."

Mike bit his lip and looked down at his hands. But then he looked up. "Hey, where did they go?"

"They went down that hole," Will replied, pointing at the ground through the window.

We stepped out of the car and got closer the hole.

"Do you see anything? I mean, in your now-memories?"

Will shook his head as we began to here tires screeching. We turned around to see trucks with their lights shining bright.

The three of us looked at each other scared. "I-I can't be here. They might take me away again," I said with a shaky voice.

I put my hood on and sped to the car. I quickly got inside and locked the doors. Men in white, protective suits and medal rods exited the vehicles and went down into the hole that Bob and Joyce had entered.

Shortly after, Hopper and them came out of the large opening in the ground. But something of the unexpected happened. Will fell to the ground holding his stomach.

"Will. Will, you okay?"

"Will what's wrong?"

His body was jerking and wasn't responding back or communicating in any way. I flipped on his back and Mike and I stepped back. Will was having a seizure for no reason and I was scared. I used to be scared all the time but this time I was definitely scared. Scared for Will, scared for Mike.

I was terrified of the future.
