Weeks have passed since the day they made the deal. And there had never been a single day where they did not encounter a single demon. Sometimes there were two and other times way bigger than Albert, but none of them were able to defeat him.

As time passed by, Mike learned how to defend himself. Albert didn’t teach him or anything, he just observed every single movement of his. But because of Mike’s small body, he couldn’t fight like Albert. So he bought an Army knife, although he was unsure if it is of any use considering that what he has to deal with are creatures, entirely out of ordinary.

Albert and Mike just came home from a recent attack. As they entered the apartment, they couldn’t help but talk about the demon they just fought.

“You mean to tell me, people use that demon’s look to make children happy?” Albert said in disbelief.

“They’re called clowns, Albert.” Mike explained “And yes they’re supposed to make children happy.”

  “..Supposed to…?”

  “They don’t.”

“Humans are so weird.” Albert laughed.

Albert easily made himself at home and sat on the couch. On his hand rests a pouch of the gold coins he collected from the demons he have killed. As Albert puts out a handful of coins and started counting them, Mike kept staring at him. The shimmering gold in Albert’s hand kept his attention. ‘What’s it for?’ he thought, though he couldn’t just ask him bluntly. Maybe it’s too personal. So he kept that itching curiosity to himself for now.

Mike opened up his cabinets in search of something to eat

Mike opened up his cabinets in search of something to eat. All those fighting and killing made him hungry.

“What are you doing?” Albert asked in curiosity.

  “Looking for food…”

“You look for food in there?”

“That really depends if something is in here, If not then I have no choice but to buy ou—”, Mike paused as he saw instant ramen at the back. “Aha!”

  “What’s that?” Albert asked.

“It’s every student’s survival food.” Mike raised the cup in front of Albert for him to see, “Cup noodles! Want some? I have lots of flavors.”

“Well… I guess it won’t hurt to try.”

As they sat there eating their noodles, they didn’t say a thing. After being together for so long, they’re not really the type of people who would open up to each other. There’s not much to say anyway. But for Mike, his curiosity about the coins grew the more he looks at the pouch on Albert’s hand.

He couldn’t take it anymore, so he asked.

“Are you gonna buy an Iphone 6 with those or what?”

“What? No. Why would I buy a phone?” Albert said in confusion.

“Just kidding,” Mike laughed, “I’m just curious what the coins are for.”

“Oh...well…” Albert doesn’t want to open up. He doesn’t want Mike to know what he really wants. He thought it was stupid for a demon to want something like this. But they made a deal, if Mike is open to him, might as well be open to Mike.

“You see, I...I’ve always wanted to be human.”

“ Uhhh… What?” Mike turned to Albert and stared at him in confusion.

“You humans seem so happy and free not like us demons…… full of despair.”  He looked at his hand, slouching forward. “And I’m kinda sick of being the cruelest demon in hell and tired of enticing mortals to commit sins.” He added.

“We’re miserable creatures that take pleasure in seeing others in pain.”

“And I… I hunt demons because I asked the Angels to reincarnate me and for my sins to be forgiven. They said that I have to collect these heaven’s coins in exchange for my wish and I’ve already collected thousands of them, been collecting them for a century. I don’t know how much I need but they will come for me if…when it’s enough.” He explained to Mike.

Mike holds his hand, “I’m sure that time will come soon. You just need to keep hoping.”

“Hope?” He chuckles. “What a concept.”

The doorbell suddenly rang making them both jump in surprise. They let go of each other’s hand when they notice that they were. Mike’s face lit up in red. And Albert couldn’t get any redder.

The doorbell rang again this time Mike shouted, “Coming!” and walked towards the door like his limbs didn’t have joints. When he opened it, a man stands there with a duffle bag at his feet.

He looks like he’s in his mid-40’s, has a neck length hair with the same brown color as Mike’s, and has a stubble beard. He’s wearing a formal light blue polo with his sleeve rolled up and his chest a bit exposed from his collar. There’s also a suspenders over it attached to his brown slacks with a white belt and he’s wearing black shoes.

The Man smiled at Mike and yelled, “My son!” then promptly hugs him.

Mike looked surprised and could speak he could believe that his dad is here, he wondered how he found him and where he come from. But he didn’t care about the details, what’s important is that he’s here.

Albert looked at the man, he felt like something is wrong, but he couldn’t tell what. All he knows is that this old man shouldn’t be trusted.

Mike returned the hug, a tear falling from his face.

  He finally saw his dad.
