Peri excuses herself and goes to sit with her other friends under the steady stream of snow, while Terrance flies to stand beside Queen Clarion. Vidia flies to an empty perch and we all follow.
"Hang on," I start, thinking back to when I arrived. "Aren't we supposed to sit with our talent group?"
Rose sighs, looking at me. "Well, yeah we are but it doesn't matter, because we're all -" she points to the six of us. "- representatives for our talent group."
I nod in understanding and look around, for the room had gone silent. Fawn nudges my arm and points at a seed floating down to where the queen stood, waiting.
Terrance had an acorn of dust and was waiting until the seed landed. The second it did, he poured the cup over the seed, which turned into a male fairy. We all hold our breath, waiting.
"Hello?"
I swear nearly all the girls swooned. Only Fawn, Vidia and I stayed normal, staring at the others in disgust. Fawn gets up and Vidia shoves the others up. I follow suit and follow Fawn up to the mushrooms, where we would each put something on one to signify the talent. I take my hammer out of my belt and lay it on one, while Rosetta places a flower, Vidia creates a small whirlwind and Fawn places a baby skunk. Irredessa places a ray of moonlight and Silvermist creates a small water looking glass. The other talents place theirs and we return to our seats, watching.
I noticed that Queen Clarion smiled at me as I place down my hammer. The hammer that was proved to be one of two that allowed my work to be brilliant. Peter had the other.
The fairy walks towards a painting of a falling leaf, vibrant in colour. The second he touched it, the colour fades. He looks at the queen who extends an arm and he walks to another stool. The stool with my hammer. I grimace as I wonder if he'll let me have it back if he turned out to be a tinker. His fingers graze across it, but nothing happens.
I sigh in relief.
Queen Clarion shakes her head and he moves on, walking to the baby skunk. It doesn't run away or hide, it leans towards him.
"Great," Fawn grumbled sarcastically. "I get to look after pretty boy here."
"What, no magic glow or flash of light?" I whisper.
"Not sure. We all got one but I suppose the evidence is clear. He's an animal fairy," Rosetta sighs.
"An animal talent. Your name is Gabriel."
The fairy beams.
"Ready to try those wings?"
Gabriel nods enthusiastically and the Queen straightens out his wings, sprinkling pixie dust on then like she did with me. She takes his hands and he takes off. Once he lands, the queen goes to remove the stools, but a fairy yells out.
"Look!"
We all look to where she was pointing. Another seed had made it. Terrance had filed his pot up again and was waiting. He does the same as he did with the last, revealing a very small fairy. She doesn't say anything, instead, hides behind her long hair that was the exact shade of my dress. Leaf green. One of the art fairies shot up and tapped the painting, restoring the colour. Fawn flies down to the skunk and it sits still once again, waiting.
"These will help you discover your talent," Queen Clarion explained as Fawn returned to our perch.
The girl stands and looks at the painting, but the colours fade the second she skims it with her fingertips. She walks to the mini tornado but it vanishes too. Vidia sneers in delight. The small fairy walks almost anxiously to the hammer. My hammer. A faint glow emerges when she touches it, but it lasts but a heartbeat. Queen Clarion stood dumbstruck for a moment before moving again. She looks at the girl, and I watch as the grip on the hammer tightens.
