June 2, 1953 - Coronation Day
...
The Lancaster droned through the air in the sky over London; the sound of a 4-engine aircraft, heavily loaded.
As soon as it was visible to the lookout, the signal went out over the walkie-talkies (some relayed by hand-signal). One word: "Now".
Around Westminster, on all sides of the Abbey complex, the drivers counted down on their watches, rolling out when they hit their timing-marks. Lorries mostly, a few smaller vehicles, couple of taxis. Fully loaded; packed with C4, gasoline, fuel-oil, a little old-fashioned dynamite, & some fertiliser-based nitrogen explosives.
They hit the abbey from all sides at once. Driving straight through the crowds, smashing barriers. The lorries took the lead, striking the major access-points to the building, & clearing paths for the smaller vehicles when needed.
They hit the entrances to the Abbey simultaneously; as planned. All of them. Crashing & blowing up. Some of them scattering smaller explosive devices.
In 2 minutes it was done.
Explosions (some of them multiple) blocked every exit, & the mayhem outside blocked any egress or aid. It was chaos.
Less than thirty seconds later, the Lancaster ploughed into Westminster Abbey. Dive-bombing dead-centre; with an almost-full load of fuel, and a block-buster bomb surplus from the war. The impact-timed fuse detonated on a 2-second delay.
The new Queen, the (immediate) Royal family, and much of the Government of The United Kingdom (& a good bit of the leadership of the Commonwealth & parts of the rest of the world) had ceased to exist.
A "Kamikaze Attack", was what the papers called it.
(expand this; figure out how much of the details of the attack to put here & how much to do later in the story? like during the investigation, flashbacks, etc.)
...
the immediate aftermath.
local @ the abbey (put that now or later?), (a small wave of planned assassinations against other members of the royal family in line for the throne, & the duke of Windsor; starting quietly before the coronation day incident (with minor non-notable persons, "accidents", & such. then a blitz right after the attack on the abbey. co-ordinated. IRA & much KGB/GRU/whatevertheywerecalledatthetime involvement), national/gov't./etc. & global. what's left of the UK gov? & what dopes parliament do? public shock hurt & outrage. press screaming big headlines all over the place. police & military action; martial law, etc. "interim/emergency government". the beginning of investigations. the first hint of Resistance to this.
IRA takes credit (overtly or covertly?); USSR intel keeps quiet. start of (strong) anti-Irish national sentiment. was the gov of Ireland involved ifso how/howdeep?
beginning of the question of "what do we do next/now?" the question of the succession, & figuring it out. (the question of ending the monarchy/republic).
eventually/at least (after the assassinations) they figure out that the legal succession has fallen on the senior Hohenzollern prince (via queen Victoria). (should there be a "place-holder" king/queen in between? older, unmarried - childless person? effectual or ineffectual ifso? (i.e.: strong/weak?) (this would raise questions of adoption, etc.?) - there is immediate debate of having a Hohenzollern Prince "the kaiser's grandson" (but queen Victoria's great great grandson) on the throne of Britain.
