Hanging off the ladder, the only thing he could think about was not only his survival but his mother. Out of all that was happening right there and then, it was her. All the things he could have done with her, all the things he and his father could have done with her before she... No. He had to live for her, somehow, some way, he had to live for her. Cole struggled to hoist himself back up onto the ladder, his head colliding with the side of a building.
"Hang in there Cole!" he heard Jay shout from above as he finally managed to grab hold of the rope. One side of the ladder had already snapped and he was stalled for time.
"I got it!" he assured them. But then... Cole heard the rope above snap. 'No,' he thought as it finally gave way. He stared ahead as Jay cried his name. He fell. Fell into the Darkness he and his friends were desperately trying to avoid. Into the Darkness that had haunted his dreams since it had touched him. The sound of the Bounty flying away gave him no hope. Every flicker of it, gone. The only good thing about it now though, was that he'd see his mother- Again, why at this point was he thinking about his mother. His best friends had just witnessed his 'death'. Well, yeah he wasn't dead yet but he was almost certain to be. But why her? But it was too late before he could finish his thought. He'd hit the ground and the world turned dark.
