Dark clouds covered the sky as I stared out the window, watching little children run home before the first drop of rain hit their skin.
I never understood why people only recognized the sun beamin' down and shining as a beautiful day but saw rain as ugly. I think the rain is just as beautiful. I try to see the beauty in most of the things people find ugly or seem to misunderstand.
I decided to check the mail before it started raining too hard. I grabbed my hoodie and Nike slides along with my keys.
Walking to the mailboxes located in the front of my apartment complex, I noticed a guy standing by the entrance with tattered, blood stained clothing on.
"Ok Reign. This is one of those times that you think with your mind not your heart. Walk back to the house" I mumbled under my breath.
Yet and still I found my feet making my way over to this man. Standing at about 6 feet, I noticed the guy had light freckles that graced his cheeks.
He had tattoos but you can vaguely see them due to the dirt and oil that compacted his skin. His eyes were dark brown and he smelled.
"Excuse me?" I stared to get his attention.
"I'll leave in a minute. Don't call the cops. I know I'm not supposed to be out here like this." He grumbled gathering his small drawstring bag."Oh no! I wasn't coming over for that. My name is Reign." I exclaimed with a smile and held my hand out.
He looked at my hand as if I were the dirty one and grunted at me.
"So what you want lady?""Reign. It's Reign. But I noticed you were out here and it's about to storm. Just wanted to extend an invitation to my home. You could get a nice hot shower and some food."
"Listen Raven, Rima, whoever you are aight? I ain't no charity case. I know what you think. I ain't bout to be used so you can put your conscience at ease. I'm good." He sniffed.
"It's not about my conscience, sir. I was doing this because I know I would want someone to do the same for me if I were in your position. Y'know the whole 'do unto others' thing. It's fine if you want to decline. But word of advice, the purpose of human life is to serve and show compassion and the will to help others" I stated.
I proceeded to walk away until I heard him mumble out "Albert Schweitzer" I turned around to see his head down. I smiled a little bit and continued to head to my apartment hoping he'd follow me. But he never did.
