"Gabriela? Gabriella, wake up. I said wake up!" a young boy said, shaking his sister's shoulder.
"Go away," she mumbled into her pillow.
He sighed. "Gabriela Nilda Lopez, if you don't wake up right now mama is going to kill jou. What sort of girl sleeps in on the day of her quincenaria?" Gabriela groaned, reaching around behind her, smacking him in the head with surprising accuracy, seeing as her face was still buried in the pillow. He laughed. "Come on. Before mama comes and kills jou. Which, to be honest, isn't that far off, unless jou get up now."
She sighed and finally lifted her head out of the pillow. "Tacito, jou are a horrible brother. Did jou know that?"
“What is that supposed to mean, huh, Gabi?" he said, and then he began viciously tickling her sides.
She squealed. "Tacito Lopez! Get off of me right now!" she demanded between giggles. He was seventeen years old but she swore that sometimes he was so childish.
"Say please."
"Por favor!" she yelled.
He smiled evilly. "I never said I’d stop!" She just kept laughing and making futile attempts to push him away.
"Gabriela! Tacito! Come here! Right now!" came their mother's strict voice from downstairs. Tacito finally let his sister go and extended his hand to help her up.
"Gracias," she said, following him downstairs.
Gabriela was a petite thing, standing at barely five feet tall. Her soft black hair fell in waves down to her waist, framing her delicate-featured face and providing sharp contrast to her bright brown eyes.
Tacito, on the other hand, was, while the same height, far more built than his little sister. He shared the same brown eyes and dark hair, but beyond that the similarities were subtle. His face was much more angled and sharp, resembling their father more than their mother, who was a spitting image of her daughter.
"So, Gabriela, I picked up jour dress from the cleaners. Are jou ready for jour party tonight?" their mother said once she had sat down at the table. Adriana Lopez was a kind soul, but rather stern, especially when it came to her children. She was the head of the household, and even more so since her husband, Tacito and Gabriela’s father, died.
He wrinkled his nose. "How can jou eat that?" he asked his sister, who was currently picking daintily at a bowl of fruit that was dwarfed next to his overflowing plate.
"It's good for jou," she reasoned. "And jes, mama. I am."
“Jou do know that jou need more than one food group. Meats, breads, even a little sugar every now and again wouldn’t kill jou. Jou say that’s good for jou, but I just say it is unhealthy.”
She rolled her eyes. "It is healthy, Tacito. And I eat other food groups, I just like to start out my day with something other than grease,” she said calmly, nodding towards the dripping bacon that Tacito was currently shoving in his mouth. He glared at her, but she merely smiled and popped a strawberry into her mouth.
Adriana, clearly seeing the tension between her children, quickly stepped in. “By the way, Tacito, jou got a letter. It has the Galactic League seal on it.”
He looked up immediately. "Mama! Why didn't jou tell me sooner?!" he yelled. She handed him the letter off of the counter. He ripped it open and skimmed it. His eyebrows furrowed.
"What the hell..." he muttered. His mother smacked him on the head for his language.
"What's wrong?" Gabriela asked as her brother shook his mother away. He read the letter aloud:
"'Dear Tacito Lopez,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been officially accepted into the Galactic League of Extraterrestrial Exploration's Starship Ranger Corp. A Starship Ranger will be by tomorrow at five’o’clock pm to pick you up and escort you to the Academy for your official training.
Sincerely,
The G.L.E.E.”
Gabriela tipped her head. "That's good isn't it? They accepted jou!"
He shook his head. "Si, but they didn't ask for an interview, or any information. They only know my name. They don't even know if I'm a boy or girl!" he explained.
His mother looked over at him. "I guess they just want to train jou all up so jou can all get out into the field. Besides, no girl has ever signed up for the combat area. Why should they start now? Not that I think they'd care either way." She looked back to the dishes she was washing and muttered quietly to herself.
"What was that, mama?" Gabriela asked, face going white.
"Nothing, Gabriela, nothing," Adriana said with a smile, running her fingers once through her daughter's hair. But Gabriela had heard what she said. Why would she say something like that? She couldn’t mean it.
Yet her words battered around Gabriela’s brain.
Just another batch of soldiers to sacrifice. Another line of defense that will only fall. They always fall…
