_____

All she could think about was his eyes.

They were deep, dark depths that were once full of anger, which was bad.

She didn't think she'd loved him then.

Time passed, his eyes were adoring, which made her confused.

But she usually didn't have a rapid heartbeat when she was confused with anything else, did she?

Out of all of them, the one thing she knew for sure was that these eyes of his were the worst.

_________

The clouds, though still gray, had stopped condensing.

She was in a local café with Lei to her side, him across from her, and Xiaozi next to him.

Not awkward, at all.

Xiaozi was talking a mile a minute about her and Si's romantic courtship. Lei was drinking his tea and...probably thinking about hot springs.

She was trying to pretend she was anywhere else but there.

And he was looking at her with the coldest eyes.

They only grew colder when Lei's hand accidentally brushed hers when he reached for more tea. He hadn't taken a sip from his tea which she could tell now was almost freezing cold.

Almost as cold as his eyes.

She looked away from him for what felt like the thousandth time, and tried to ignore his icy gaze for the rest of time there, pretending it didn't make her heart twist painfully inside.

_________

His eyes were what she was thinking of again, in the sauna. She couldn't believe she'd let herself be dragged here by Xiaozi, nor that she was at a resort with Lei.

The heat of the room and Xiaozi's babbling made her feel drowsy, as she tried to hold on to her thoughts.

That blank stare . . . it had been like he didn't even know who I was. She blinked a few times, and splashed some water on her face, trying to process it.

Daoming Si. Not. Knowing. Me. She'd never seen him that emotionless, except for when something flickered in his eyes when he saw Lei touch her. She forgot Xiaozi was in the sauna with her.

She sank deeper and deeper into the water.

"–then I told them, no, of course not, I knew they were only trying to distract me from Ah Si. But they'd underestimated my smartness, because–"

The steam that surrounded her was almost like an embrace, making her vision go hazy as she was reminded of his warmth. The water encapsulated her.

"–I knew exactly what they were trying to do! And I got four hours of shopping with helpers carrying around my bags– SHANCAI!"

I love you, Daoming Si, she thought. The last words she heard were someone calling her.

"Shancai! Shancai!"

Is that you, Ah Si?

And then she was gone.

(Outside, a single ray of sun peeked out from the clouds.)
