"I can't believe my soulmate is you."

She'd just met her soulmate, and that was what he chose to say?

Shancai took a deep breath. "Well, I don't even believe in soulmates, and for the record I think this is a complete scam, so who is really the foolish one here?" she said back, incensed.

"You–" he spluttered, his face heating up.

She stared him down, while one of his tall friends laughed. Her soulmate recovered and continued, ignoring them.

"How dare you talk to me like that? Does someone like you even know who I am? Well, I'll tell you. I am the heir to the Daoming business line and fortune–"

One of his friends, the sleepy looking one, yawned, while the bespectacled one shook his head and turned to the tallest one. "Let's go."

"–and the most handsome and intelligent man that has ever graced this school," he ended. She was impressed he didn't even have to take a breath after saying all that.

"I'm impressed," she said.

"And my sister is the most–" He paused. ". . . wait, what?" He preened a little. "You. . . you're impressed by me?"

She smiled at him.

"Yes, I'm impressed." She took a deep breath. "I'm impressed by how one person can lack such self awareness and actual personality yet contain all the ego in the world."

And with that she stood up, righting herself, and turned to go, when all of a sudden–

Snap!

She turned back, and her formerly smug expression turned to one of horror. The bracelet was still holding them together! She was stuck, stuck to him by her wrists and that god-awful magnetic bracelet.

He looked at her, still stunned into silence from her outburst just moments before. They stared at each other for a few seconds, the reality of the situation dawning on them. He spoke first.

"Is this supposed to happen?"

"I don't. . . think so." She observed him carefully from the corner of her eye. When he looked so thoughtful like this, he could actually be considered good looking.

"Well, we have to get it off! I don't want to be stuck to you!"

. . . and he was back to the attractiveness of troll level.

Her cheeks colored. "You know. . . I don't exactly like being this close to you either!" Then noticing what she said, she realized that she was practically sitting on him, and he seemed to realize this too, as he coughed and looked away.

She immediately tried to scramble off for as much as the bracelet would allow and then sighed. "We have to do something," she said resignedly.

He didn't respond.

"What's your name?"

"What?"

"It's just a question. I atleast should know the name of my fake soulmate conjured up by this scam you talk about."

"I didn't mean it was a complete scam. . ." she started, ashamed, because that wasn't really how she felt.

"Those were your exact words–"

"Shut it." She took a deep, calming breath. "My. . . my name is Shancai."

He grinned. Did he like the sound of her name that much?

"My name is Daoming Si." He held out his hand to shake it with hers and she placed her hand in his, and they shook.

Then they realized what they were doing.

"We–we aren't stuck anymore!" she said, laughing in disbelief. She shook her wrist side to side a few times.

"Yeah. . ." he said, smiling. "I can't believe it."

"Wow." Her giggles subsided, and she massaged her hand a bit. For some reason it felt weird after he had touched her. She looked back up at him. His responding intense stare made her blush.

After a few silent moments he coughed again, looking away.

"I guess I'll see you around then, soulmate," he said to her, still smiling, but seeming a little sad. "Or not."

"What? What do you mean?"

"Well. . . we may technically be soulmates, but we aren't obliged under any contract or anything to stay together, you know." He rubbed his wrist in the same way she had. "The magnetic bracelets are what you make of them."

"That. . . makes sense," she said. But for some reason, now. . . she felt strangely sad, like she had just lost something. Something big.

He nodded tightly when she didn't say anything else, and then turned to walk away.

She turned too, then stopped.

The magnetic bracelets are what you make of them.

She shook her head, trying to shake off the weird thought. But as soon as she did this, suddenly, bits and pieces of their encounter rushed through her head, fast, and she couldn't stop them.

Those were your exact words–

What's your name?

You. . . you're impressed by me?

She winced. What was the first thing he had said to her?

I can't believe my soulmate is you.

And the last. . . the last thing he had said: that the bracelets were what she made of them.

She whipped around suddenly, and started running in the direction where he left.

"Daoming Si!"

She rushed all the way down, down to the now deserted cafeteria where they had first been magnetically attracted to each other. She heard ringing in her ears as she stopped at the entrance, panting.

He was there, looking lost.

She repeated his name, and he turned to look at her.

"MeetmeatthecyborgcafeinSinanroad. . . youcanhelpmefixtheirpartsanddeliverfoodforthemwithmymotherandI."

"What?"

"Don't make me repeat myself, Daoming Si." She closed her eyes, trying not to look at him. "I'm already so embarrassed."

He looked confused at first, then slowly, as he registered her words, the corners of his lips pulled up and his face looked to be full of joy.

"But. . . what? Why?" Even though he looked like he already knew.

She sighed impatiently and held up her wrist.

"We are soulmates, after all."
