After finally making our way into Hogwarts, it was time for the sorting ceremony. Each year, it was the first years who were sorted into their houses however, since I was new I had to be sorted before them, probably to get me out of the way. Not gonna lie, I was a nervous wreck considering I was the only fifth year getting sorted.

"Scamander, Iris!" Called out Professor McGonnagall as all the attention turned to me. My ears picked up whispers around me as they recgonized the last name. At this, anxiety burned inside of me and I felt butterflies in my stomach. Tightening my left hand around the bracelet Rolf gave me on my 13th birthday, I walked up and sat down as Professor McGonnagall propped the hat onto my head.

Instantly I heard a voice in my mind:
"Interesting, interesting;
A thirst for knowledge so pure and raw, theres no denying you'd make the perfect Ravenclaw,
but wait- there's so much more,
brave & daring, you might as well be a Gryffindor.
Loyalty you certainly value, sure enough,
your choices could land you in Hufflepuff,
However, ambition & determination lie within,
you will definitely make a cunning...

"SLYTHERIN!"

It yelled the last part out loud.

Cheers erupted from the Slytherin table as I got  up and made my way, relieved for the moment to be over. As I sat myself down next to Pansy, a boy sitting from across me spoke up, "And I thought you'd be in hufflepuff," he smirked.

"Do I really seem that nice?" I furrowed my brows in disgust, sarcastically making it sound like a bad thing- although personally I love Hufflepuffs.

"Just considering that your grandfather was one," he wondered aloud and continued, "Blaise Zucchini, by the way." Suddenly, I snickered at his last name.

"Whats so amusing, Scamander?" He questioned.

"I'm sorry- but, is your last name really Zucchini?" I half laughed- half answered.

"Zabini. Not whatever you heard," he corrected, annoyed.

"She won't understand, Americans can be a little brainless sometimes. And in her case, all the time," Draco casually butted in. I frowned at him. What was his problem? Couldnt he just keep his snide remarks to himself? Ron was right, Slytherins could be pretty nasty.

Abruplty, food magically appeared on our table as the conversation was cut short. The two goons that were with me on Hogwarts Express instantly began stuffing their mouths with food. Since I was actually starving, I would've done the same but resisted to once I noticed how obnoxious the two of them looked. I looked over and met eyes with Draco who was smirking at my expression of disgust from sitting near the two food lovers.

"Crabbe, Goyle, you might wanna tone it down a bit; Scamander's been staring at you two, probably falling in love with the pigging around," Draco spat as Crabbe and Goyle continued to stuff their mouths with a tinge of embarressment.

"Oh shut up," I replied, annoyed, and helped myself to some very attractive pasta.

After dessert, the  bell suddenly rang as the perfects of each house led their first years along with the others to their common rooms.

Draco and Pansy led us to the Slytherin common room which I must say, was perfect. The dim lighting, serpent statues, emerald fire and cozy dark couches were everything I'd hoped for the common room to be like. I couldn't wait to read books by the fire every night.

I was led to my dorm by Pansy since she happened to share it with me along with two other girls; Daphne Greengrass and Millicent Bulstrode.

It was already time for bed so we all just arranged our things around, changed and got ready for bed.

"So," Started Daphne, as she made her way on the small bean bags circled in the middle of the room, "How come you're at Hogwarts now and not Ilvermorny?"

"Well I was living with my grandparents in America and I knew I couldn't live with them forever so once my sister, Sage, was old enough to take custody of me, I flew out to live with her in England," I explained, trying to keep it as brief as possible and as boring as possible- even if that meant leaving out major details. Like the fact that my brothers death had affected Sage so much (as well as myself), that she'd requested me to come stay with her since she did live alone and having her sister with her would help her. It helped me too.

"What about your parents?" Pansy asked egarly as she propped herself on the bean bag next to mine.

"They're dead," I stated simply. Theres not much to say since my dad died before I was born and my mom died after giving birth to me and my twin brother, Rolf. Sage was affected the most since she knew and grew up with both mom and dad. I felt awful for her, espicially after Rolf's death. No. Don't think about him right now Iris or you'll end up having a mental breakdown, I reminded myself.

"Oh," Pansy said awkwardly, not knowing what to say.

"That's a bit boring," Millicent Bulstrode spoke for the first time. I glared at her, how dare she. I was about to yell some profanities at her when-

"I'm really sorry about that," Said Daphne sympathetically. I gave her a small smile and said its fine.

"Oh my God," Pansy bellowed as our heads snapped to her, "We are way past our bedtime and as prefect it is my duty to-"

"Who cares," Daphne groaned as she got up and walked over to her bed while Millicent did the same. After nagging everyone for a bit, Pansy went to bed as well and so did I.
