Liana was tired of staring at the walls. It had been so long since she'd been outside. How she wished she could breath in fresh air and not the damp murky air in the room? She'd not wanted to dwell on the fact that her dilemma was mostly Gina's fault but now it was impossible to ignore it. She thought about Gina all the time and regretted doing so many things with her. She'd cursed the day they met countless times even though it didn't make her feel better.
Liana's mother came into the room when she was unpacking.
"We have to go now," she said. "You'll finish unpacking later."
Liana had relunctantly followed her mother and her father drove them to meet the Breya family. Liana's parents had been friends with The Breyas for a long time.
Liana had hit it off with Gina Breya immediately. After they were introduced, Mrs Breya asked Gina to take Liana to her room. While in Gina's room, they played Scrabble and at some point, Gina said she needed water and went to the kitchen.
It was then that Liana noticed a box under the bed. She pulled it out and almost screamed when she saw so many keys. Gina found her rummaging through them.
"Stop!" Gina yelled and Liana froze. Gina quickly pushed the box back. "Why are you going through my things? I don't even know you."
"I'm sorry Gina," Liana said. "I didn't mean-"
"Oh yes, you did."
"I'm sorry," Liana said, standing up.
"Promise that you'll never tell anyone about this."
"I promise."
Those first days had been rough but in the end they became the tightest of friends. Liana always thought nothing would ever come between them. She'd thought she could never hate Gina but things were changing. She was beginning to regret being Gina's friend.
The man who'd told her to call him RK came in, holding a glass of orange juice and a plate of pasta. He put them on a stool and placed it near Liana. He went ahead to tear off the duct tape and untie her.
"Eat," he said.
Liana swallowed the saliva that had pooled in her mouth. "Why are you being so nice to me? Are you trying to poison me?"
"I'm only following orders, girl. If it was up to me I'd have killed you by now."
"You're just a dog who'll-"
"Shut up and eat. I'll do whatever I want. Infact you're not even important but Gina is. She's the one I can't ever touch so don't try to act smart with me. I might just shoot your brains out."
Liana ate to her fill and washed down the food with the juice. It was a little too tasty but she hadn't had any drink except water for the past days. Five minutes after she'd drank the juice, she started feeling extremely tired and drowsy.
"Did you put something in my drink?" She asked RK who was playing a game on his phone.
RK smiled. "Yes, what will you do about it?" He laughed. "Nothing."
Sometime later Liana became conscious and opened her eyes. She was on a bed, her hands tired up together on the bed frame. This time he'd gagged her using cloth. She was glad there was no duct tape.
"I've been waiting for you," RK suddenly appeared by the bed. He grinned at her. "This dog is very patient, Lia."
Liana just looked at him. She felt very weak and she knew it was pointless to struggle.
"You must be really sad," RK said, sitting on the bed. He touched Liana's leg and she tried to move it away. She couldn't lift it up to kick him because she had no energy. What had he put in her drink? "Gina's out there living her life while you're here suffering yet you always tried to talk her out of stealing. I feel bad for you, my tired tigress but what can I do? I'm just a dog, like you said, waiting for my master's orders."
For a long time, RK stared at Liana then suddenly got up and went away. Liana wondered why he'd tie her up and not do anything.
Liana closed her eyes and wished she could sleep and wake up when the nightmare was over. She looked up at the ceiling and silently prayed. She was not a prayerful type but at that point, there was nothing to do except pray and hope for the best.
RK came back and did something completely surprising. He got on the bed and lay beside Liana. "You're right, Liana. I'm just a dog. I don't get anything from punishing you and Gina. To be honest, it doesn't make me feel better. It won't bring back the people I've lost. Maybe i should move on and stop holding on to the past. I don't know what to do anymore."
Liana's eyes moistened as she listened to her kidnapper.
"Life is pointless." He said and turned so he was facing the door. He fell asleep after some minutes.
