Please don't judge people. You don't know what it look someone to get out of bed, look and feel presentable as possible and face the day. You never truly know the daily struggles of others. ~Healthy Place
It was already dark when Gina and the officer who'd introduced himself as Barnes reached the police station. Most of the officers had left so there were only two cars parked outside. As Gina got out of the car, she saw a boy called Rory standing outside the court building which was opposite the police station. He smiled and Gina turned away. Everything about him had annoyed her. He was in sophomore year in another college and claimed to be in love with her. Even though she'd turned him down countless times, he still kept talking about how she was all he wanted.
Detective Barnes led the way up the outdoor stairs into the station. At the door, Gina turned to see Rory who was now typing on his phone.
"Have a seat, miss Breya." Barnes indicated a couch and went to one of the inner offices. Just then, Gina's phone dinged. She unlocked it and read the message.
Keep in mind that Lia's life is in your hands. I'm watching.
Gina stood up and ran to the window then looked out. Rory was gone. It was probably him. Why hadn't she thought of it before? Rory had some strange traits. Maybe he wanted to blackmail her into being with him. He always seemed so desperate.
"Miss," a woman said and Gina turned away from the window. "Detective Barnes is waiting for you in his office. Go along the hallway and you'll find it."
"Thank you."
The office was quite small but well organized. There was a photograph of Barnes and an older man who looked identical to him. It must be his father, Gina thought.
"Take a seat," Barnes wasted no time. "When was the last time you saw Liana Tran?"
"Sunday night."
"Why did you lie to your parents about her disappearance?"
"I didn't want them to get worried. It was too soon and I thought Liana would be back before the day ended."
"It's Wednesday and it seems you weren't planning to report yet. Don't you think something could've been done if you had said the truth?"
"I do," Gina said, placing her phone on the table. "I wish I had said something. It's been so hard living without her."
"So, tell me. What happened on that evening? Was Liana acting in a strange way?"
"Not really," Gina remembered how excited they'd been and her eyes moistened. "We were bored in our bedroom so we decided to go to the forest. We loved trying to scare ourselves from there and walking to Moon's point where we'd sit and watch the stars while talking about life."
"Interesting," He said, not taking his eyes off her. He was trying to intimidate her and it was working. "What happened in the forest? How did you lose sight of her?"
Gina faked sobs, trying to buy time to come up with a good lie. Detective Barnes didn't seem to care about her emotions. She opted to tell half truth. "We had reached Dylan Ineroy's cabin and I said I'd try to scare him. Liana didn't want to risk getting caught so she hid behind some bushes. I knocked on a window of the cabin and when I heard the flip of a light switch, I ran back to the forest and called Liana. She didn't answer. I thought she was trying to scare me so I waited for an hour. When she didn't appear, I went home."
"Thank you for your statement, Miss Breya. Is there anything you think could help us find her?"
"I'll get a missing person poster made tomorrow."
"Are you aware that concealing information is punishable by law?"
"Do you think I would conceal information, knowing that my best friend is in danger?"
"I hope not."
"Please try and find Lia. I miss her a lot."
"Okay. We'll try. Would you like me to take you back home?"
"No."
"Aren't you afraid after what happened to your friend?" He asked. "Mr and Mrs Tran will be here tomorrow."
"It's okay. I'm in town so I don't think anything bad could happen to me. I'm going to meet a friend."
"Who?"
"Rory Mann."
"Where? I can drop you there."
"Myrr's."
Detective Barnes took her and waited until she'd entered the coffee shop before driving away. Gina immediately got out and walked to Contra bar where she hoped to find Rory.
The bar was quite crowded so she went straight to the counter and started looking around. After some seconds, she saw Rory talking to Hellen's cousin Aya. Hellen was on the same table but she was talking to someone else. It was a man wearing a hoodie. She couldn't tell who it was as his back was turned to her.
Gina sauntered to the table. "Hey guys." The man talking to Hellen said something to her and walked away. "How are you?"
"We're okay," Rory said, staring at her.
"Where have you been, Gina?" Aya asked, smiling.
"Take a seat, Gina." Hellen said.
"Actually, I wanted to talk to Rory about something." She said, looking at him. "Would you please come outside with me?"
"We get it," Aya winked as Rory stood up. "Have fun."
"I know everything," Gina said when they were outside.
"What do you mean? That I love you?"
"Cut the crap, Rory. You're blackmailing me."
He laughed. "What are you talking about?"
Gina studied him. "Tell me the truth if you really love me. Are blackmailing me or not?"
"Maybe," he said, smirking. He grinned. "I like seeing you like this. Nervous. It's good to know you're not as strong as you seem."
"Shut-"
"Oh hi there, Gina." Dylan Ineroya interrupted. Gina's heartbeat skyrocketed immediately. He looked perfect, as usual. Just her bad luck. Why did Dylan have to find her with Rory?
