"Hey," Liana said, gently banging on the metal bars. Gina looked up but remained seated on the floor of the tiny cell. Using her right hand, she pushed her hair back and stared with a blank facial expression.
She stood up straight and gripped the metal bars. "I'm sorry I let you down, Lia. I feel really bad you had to go through terrible things because of my mistakes. I know I don't deserve to be forgiven for putting you in danger."
"I don't believe you," Liana said, looking at the bulge in the pocket of Gina's uniform. She didn't have to look twice to know the contents. "Where did you steal those from?"
"Got them from the reception but I don't know which doors they open."
"Aren't you worried about what might happen to whoever is in charge of those keys? You only care about yourself."
"No, I tried so hard to resist because I know that someone will be in trouble. I wish I could take them back but it's impossible."
"Detective Barnes knows he's holding someone with a key obsession. They'll know it's you and will pile more charges against you. Give them to me."
With a quick scan of the surroundings, Gina did as told. Liana went to the reception and conspicuously placed them under a book while talking to the receptionist. She went to sit on a chair near the entrance. Seeing Gina in the cell made her feel terrible about what she was doing. She opened her bag and fished out a tin containing her pain relievers. They were the first things she'd bought since her release. She put two in her mouth and chewed them.
After two minutes, she went back to Gina's cell. Gina was seated on a thin mattress placed on the lower part of the tiny bunk bed.
"Why?" Gina asked.
"Why what?" Liana asked. Knowing how sneaky Gina could get sometimes, Liana decided to play dumb.
"Why are you lying to the detective? Are those thugs blackmailing you?"
"You should know because they're your thugs."
"You know that's a lie. I have never seen any of those men. Please Lia, I'm truly sorry and I even want to see a therapist because I don't want to continue like this. Will you please tell Barnes the truth?"
"I have told the truth. I'll not lie to save you."
"Are you lying to save Hellen? I know there's nothing I can do to make you change your mind. It's alright. I can bear this for Hellen's sake."
"Where do you get the idea that I'm being blackmailed?"
"Because I know you. You'd never betray a friend and I've been in your position before. I'm glad you didn't talk about Cole because I never killed him."
RK had sounded so sure that Gina killed Cole.
"It's true I went to his apartment with the intention of killing him but I found him dead already. Someone killed him before I got there. I'd told my cousin to scare him but he'd not yet gone there."
It was them; RK and his boss. Maybe that's why they'd not bothered to make Liana lie about it. There was no evidence against Gina. That idiot had lied, making her believe Gina was a murderer. What else could he have lied about?
"You need to believe me," Gina said in an urgent tone.
Liana believed her but she couldn't say it. She suddenly became furious. "I have to go."
Without waiting for Gina to reply, she started walking away. She had to give RK a piece of her mind. How dare he lie to her?
She found her parents at the reception. "Mum, dad. What are you doing here?"
"We came to pick you up," her mother said. "You're not going back to that criminal's house. We got some of your stuff. You're coming to the hotel with us."
"But her parents are good people."
"They let you get kidnapped," her mother reasoned.
Liana felt bad for Gina's parents. Her lies had cost them a lot. She didn't like lying to her parents but she had to do everything possible for Hellen's safety. The phone RK had given her began to ring.
"Excuse me," she said. "I have to use the restroom."
"You moron," she said after receiving the call. "You lied to me about Cole in order to turn my against Gina."
"So?" He chuckled. "I enjoyed it and the best thing is that it worked."
Liana hang up.
