A Summer To Remember

RINGGGGGG my alarm clock rung. I slowly sat up in my bed and started rubbing my eyes. I reached over and grabbed my phone on the nightstand where it had been left charging. I clicked the lock button and saw that there were several texts from my brother, Steven. I scrolled through all the texts he had sent me saying, wake up, wake up, wake up. I don’t know why he couldn’t have just come up the stairs and woken me up.  With that, I pulled the covers off of me and started to trudge down the stairs. I could hear talking in the kitchen nearby. I tried to make out the voices I heard and it was my mom, Steven, and someone else’s. I crept down the stairs more quietly and peeked around the corner to see who it was. I could only see the back of his head. A few seconds later, the man got up and walked outside of the front door. “Who was that?” I said while walking into the kitchen as if I hadn’t been creeping around.  “That was the realtor.” My mom replied. “Yeah, you would’ve known too if you had woken up a little earlier,” Steven announced. “Well then why don’t you get off your phone and come upstairs and actually wake me up?” I said in an attitude. With that, Steven walked out of the kitchen knowing he had just lost that battle. “So, are we moving or something?” I questioned while opening the fridge. “Actually, yes. We are.” My mom replied. “What about my school and my friends mom??” I asked loudly. “September, don’t raise your voice.” She replied all calm. “So you just want me to make new friends and go to a new highschool? Just like that?” “If that’s what it comes down to. I’m sorry, if it does. I have no choice, my job is transferring.” At that moment, I was pretty frustrated. I was going to be a sophomore in Dallas high school. Now, I’m going to have to start all over.  The rest of the day until dinner, I was quiet, but someone had to break the silence. “Where are we even moving to?” I questioned. “Long Island BABY!” Steven replied in a very loud shout. It looks like he’s happy to go. “We actually have to pack tonight because we’re leaving at 8:00 in the morning. “ my mom said. Then there was a silence that lasted for about a minute.  “Is this what’s best for us, mom?” I asked softly. “Yes, it is.” My mother said with a smile while looking at me. “Okay. I’m fine with it.” “YEAAAA! LONG ISLAND HERE WE COME!” Steven shouted. “Jeeez Steve, you really excited.” I remarked. Then everyone started laughing. The rest of the night was good. We all helped eachother pack their things. Throughout the night, I became a little more excited about moving to New York. It did seem more fun to live there than Dallas, Texas. Hours later, we were all done and the bags were in the car. All ready to take a roadtrip to Long Island and never return. We all fell asleep in the living room together.

“Sep…sep. Wake up.” Steven said while shaking me to wake up. “We gotta go, everything’s ready and packed in the car. You can just wear that.” I got up from the couch and followed Steven out the door and he locked it. I piled into the car and fell asleep again. Days passed and we had hotels to stay the night and wake up to drive another day. After the days were done passing, I found my self on a ferry overlooking the ocean. We had gotten on one to cross from New York City to Long Island. It was very beautiful! The beauty of this state actually mesmerized me. Even though it was a little overcast, everything was still breathtaking. None of this was like Dallas. Soon enough we got to Long Island and we took our car off of the boat and drove it towards the house.  As we were driving through the neighborhood, I could see some kids outside playing soccer or just skateboarding. Along the road, trees were shading houses. Even the street was beautiful because if you traveled far enough, you’d reach a part where the houses ended and it showed the sky across the ocean.  “This is it,” my mom said while stopping the car. Without any words, Steven hopped out of the car, grabbed his bags and headed inside. The house was medium sized. Two stories. Ughh I moaned as I tried to lift my luggage because it was packed with all my clothes. Soon enough, my mom and I got all the bags out of the car and into the house. I climbed the stairs and looked for my room. There were 4 rooms total upstairs. 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, for my brother and I. Steven had clearly chosen his because he already had his signs on his door set up. “Do not disturb”. I then continued rolling my bag to the only vacant room. I took a look around the room and I found myself more than happy to get this room. It had 1 huuuge window on the side where it showed the sky and ocean. It was an amazing view. At that moment, the sun was already starting to set. The oranges, purples, and reds filled the sky and the deep blue filled the water. I put my clothes up and set my bedsheets. After an hour, I had all of my things in place ready to take on my new lifestyle. That night, for dinner, we ordered pizza. It was an enjoyable dinner actually. We were all quite excited about where we were. It was a change. “So, guys, how are you liking the house and your rooms?” my mom questioned. “Its awesome,” Steven said with a smile. “Breathtaking.” I added while shoving pizza in my mouth. “Good, I’m glad you like it.” She replied. After dinner, we headed to our rooms and fell asleep. I fell asleep with no worries because I knew that summer had just begun and I had a clean slate to start from. No reputation. I could start all over and that’s what I really needed. A permanent break from drama and divorce.
