The Final Two

Chapter 4

"Help me unblock the door!" Keira yelled, racing towards the entrance. She flipped on a light, waking any who hadn't stirred before.

People joined her efforts to unlock the door and let whoever this was a chance to come in. Keira carefully opened the door a crack so she could see Onnikka.

"Is it really you?" She asked.

"Yes! Now move!" She said with a frustrated scream as she pushed Keira out of the way.

Onnikka nearly collapsed with her second step as she entered a safe place. Keira and Mr. Brad dragged her exhausted body to the nearest –and only– chair. Once the door was secured, the small group quickly began to swarm Onnikka with a million questions and hugs.

"Alright everyone take a deep breath and two steps back." Mr. Brad said with a swatting hand motion.

They tried to do as they were told and slowly hushed down. They stared at Onnikka waiting to know what had happened outside.

"What happened?" Becca asked eagerly.

"Um, well..." she took a deep breath as she began to quickly explain.  "As you all know, Taylor and I saw someone outside and she went after them...this person wasn-" she took a deep breath as she hesitated but continued "-wasn't human.  They attacked Taylor and me, and I –uh– I barely dodged it. In the process, I dropped my phone.  I went to  run back inside, but the door had closed behind me.  I was trapped outside." she shifted her posture and hunched over, folding her hands and staring at the ground. 

"Oh, my gods..." Becca whispered to herself, holding back tears. Though they never spoke or really agreed much, it was too much to think of someone simply being gone.

After a small pause to recollect herself, Onnikka continued, "I had to find a way in, and it wasn't easy.  Eventually, I found that one of the gym doors were open.  I had to fight my way through. There were zombies everywhere. Everyone from Volleyball...young kids, their parents...my friends..." a tear slipped down her cheek as she continued, "it was hard, but I got back here as quickly as I could without running into another thing." She wiped a newly formed tear from her eye and looked up to all of us.

"I'm sorry you had to do that, we're all so sorry. Why don't you go clean up in the restroom and we all go back to bed? Would that be okay?" Keira asked Onnikka in a calming tone. Keira wrapped her arms around the poor girl and pulled her into a sad embrace.

Onnikka impishly hugged back and then went to the restroom. She stayed there for a while and when she finally returned, the lights were shut off once again and the room had fallen into a state of unconsciousness.

She curled up into a corner by herself and listened to the familiar whir of the vent fans.  She stared into the darkness as her eyes got heavier and heavier until she eventually fell asleep.

It was quiet.

Not a soul laid awake.  Which made the sudden scream seem ten-times louder.

Once again everyone had been awoken and began to cling to each other in fear because this time, the screaming was coming from somebody in the room.  Keira grabbed her phone.  She cautiously walked over to where the screaming had now stopped. She could see two dark silhouettes in the absence of light.  She turned the flashlight from her phone on and cast the light over the two people. 

"What the hell?" Keira whispered as she tried to understand what she was seeing. 

Onnikka was hunched over, a now dead, Luke.  She seemed to be chewing on his arm hungrily.  With a quick whip of the head to look at Keira, Onnikka smiled a devilish smile.  She was covered in Luke's blood and was eating his raw flesh.  Her face no longer seemed her own and her skin seemed to have decayed. She didn't seem aware of what she was doing, but she was.

"Oh crap," Keira said to herself.

The now zombified Onnikka lunged to Keira trying to claim her as the next victim.  Luckily, Keira was able to dodge the vicious attack.

She looked around at everyone's figures in the darkness.

The only thing she could say was, "Everybody run!"
